Disney’s remake of their first animated classic Snow White has been causing a stir for all the wrong reasons as fans complain about changes made to the plot.
Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular princess, has been the focus of this backlash for her comments made about how the original tale was ‘extremely dated’.
The live-action remake, according to the 22-year-old, gives Snow White back her agency as she strives to become ‘the leader she knows she can be’ rather than being in love.
This version also removes the dwarves, replacing them with a diverse group of friends, which has caused further debate among fans.
Disney has a slate of so-called live-action remakes coming to cinemas over the next few years but none have been so hotly debated as this Snow White re-do.
Legendary Disney lyricist and author Sir Tim Rice has entered into the debate, asking if the studio should even keep remaking these movies.
‘You have to take the views of today [into consideration] but I don’t think you should be completely bound by them,’ Sir Tim Rice told GB News.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was originally released in 1937, depicting a princess who flees with her stepmother, the Evil Queen, as she tries to murder her for being the fairest in the land.
In the animated classic, Snow White’s core personality traits are being kind, gentle, and very good at housekeeping.
Controversially, she is woken from a magic slumber by the Prince’s non-consensual kiss and doesn’t have much agency in the film overall.
Sir Tim, who wrote songs for Aladdin and The Lion King, continued: ‘I don’t think the 1937 Snow White is a bad film because it reflected and still reflects its time. It was sincerely made and extremely popular.
‘The character Snow White is a good and nice person. But you can’t redo it now and why would you want to because it’s already been done?
‘My question is why in a way call it Snow White and why not make a new film with an exciting story? If it’s a good story, well told, it should automatically reflect the views of today.’
This has been a common complaint levied at these Disney remakes, which include Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King, with fans asking what the point is.
Rachel said in a recently resurfaced clip: ‘It’s no longer 1937. She’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love.
‘She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.’
This sparked people to defend the fact that not every woman needs to be a ‘girl boss’ and that dreaming about love is totally acceptable.
The film had already been tentative with the audience as the dwarves were removed in favour of ‘magical creatures’ – only one of which has dwarfism.
While the original depiction was not favourable, this similarly to Hugh Grant in Wonka, has been slammed for taking jobs away from those with dwarfism.
Metro has reached out to Rachel Zegler’s representatives for comment.
