Richard Madeley has angered Good Morning Britain viewers for continuously speaking over Mick Lynch during a tense interview about the latest train strikes on Tuesday’s episode.
Lynch, who is the general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), joined the ITV programme to answer questions about the month of industrial action, which starts today (December 13).
However, the interview came to a standstill when Madeley became fixated on when the Christmas period begins.
‘Why couldn’t you have put all these strikes in January?’ Madeley began. ‘Why do you have to target people at Christmas? You’ll be putting people out of business who run hotels, who run restaurants, who run bars, and retail.
‘This is the time of year when they make their money and you’re robbing them of their income for the coming year.’
‘Well, we’re not targeting Christmas,’ Lynch insisted. ‘It isn’t Christmas yet, Richard. I don’t know when your Christmas starts, but mine starts on Christmas Eve.’
It’s over this point that Madeley and Lynch clashed, with the interview quickly descending into chaos.
‘That’s disingenuous!’ Madeley interrupted. ‘Commercial Christmas starts in December, you know that.’
‘It’s not disingenuous is it,’ Lynch replied.
‘It is disingenuous, of course it is,’ the Good Morning Britain host fired back.
‘Commercial Christmas does not start on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is when people shut early. Commercial Christmas starts at the end of November and through December and that’s when people make their money, and you are depriving them of their income!’
‘Have you finished then? You’re just ranting…,’ the RMT boss pointed out.
But Lynch still couldn’t get a word in, with Madeley continuing to speak up. ‘I won’t let you get away with nonsense,’ he doubled down.
‘You’re just talking to yourself now, Richard,’ Lynch eventually said. ‘Richard, why don’t you just interview yourself?’
‘I’m holding you to account on behalf of the viewers, not on behalf of myself’ Madeley barked.
Another entertaining day of breakfast television interviews…
Much of the country, including most of Wales and Scotland, will have no trains at all until Friday, and a small number of remaining services will only run between 7.30am and 6.30pm.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
