The surprise reveal of the Super Mario RPG remake has propelled it up Amazon’s best-selling games before it’s even come out.
While it may have lacked any showstopper reveals like a Super Mario Odyssey 2 or a new Metroid Prime 4 trailer, the latest Nintendo Direct had plenty of surprises, including an update on Detective Pikachu Returns and a new 2D Mario.
Although Super Mario Bros. Wonder served as the closing act, it seems the most popular announcement was for the remake of Super Mario RPG, the first ever role-playing game to star Nintendo’s plumber mascot and the precursor to the Paper Mario series.
Pre-orders are available ahead of its November launch and enthusiasm for the remake must have spread fast because it’s already among Amazon’s top sellers in the US and, at the time of writing, its second best-selling video game.
Technically, it sits at number seven in Amazon’s ‘best sellers in video games’ list, but most of the ‘games’ outselling it are actually gift cards for the various digital stores. In terms of actual video games, Super Mario RPG is only losing out to The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom.
In fact, for a period after its announcement last Friday, Super Mario RPG managed to outsell even Zelda, taking the number three spot, as noticed by eXputer. Considering how popular the new Zelda is, that’s an impressive feat that highlights Super Mario RPG’s reputation.
For context, the original Super Mario RPG is nearly 30 years old and was originally released for the SNES in 1996, but only in the US and Japan. Europe and Australia couldn’t play it until it was added to the Wii’s Virtual Console in 2008 and later the Wii U in 2015.
However, with the Wii and Wii U’s online stores shut down, this remake will become the most convenient (and legal) way of experiencing this unique collaboration between Nintendo and Square Enix (which was just Square at the time).
It’s not entirely clear how much involvement Square Enix has had with the remake, but the game’s original composer, Yoko Shimomura, is confirmed to be in charge of the remake’s soundtrack.
Super Mario RPG launches for Nintendo Switch on November 17.
