To anyone reading this, buckle up, because this one’s a doozy. This week, news broke that former The Bachelor star Clayton Echard, aka the lead of season 26 of the show, is being sued by a woman who claims he’s the father to her unborn twins.
According to the lawsuit filed on Aug 1, and obtained by The Sun, the 33-year-old podcast host is claiming she had a one-night stand with Echard on May 20 and has since gotten pregnant with twins. “Clayton and I met for the first time and hooked up,” the documents read, adding that she was not on birth control. Per the outlet, the two initially connected because she was interested in investing in a short-term rental property and he worked in real estate.
“I spent the night at Clayton’s apartment, then looked at the houses with him the following morning,” the documents state. “Afterwards, he took me aside and said he wasn’t ready for anything serious because The Bachelor had really destroyed his mental health.”
This story of their meeting has already been denied by the reality TV star. “My response is in the court documents,” Echard said in a statement to The Sun. “I’m not giving it the time of day because it’s baseless. We did not have sexual intercourse.”
Since finding out about her alleged pregnancy, however, the woman has contacted Echard but he refuses to believe the child is his or to take a paternity test to prove it. “When I told him I was pregnant, he started writing erratic, illogical and threatening messages,” the woman detailed in a letter to the Scottsdale Police Department where she questioned her safety.
“He has been clear that being a father has not been in his life plan and would get in the way of his dating and professional life,” the email continued. “I am very concerned about my safety and I don’t know what actions Clayton will take because he is so volatile, controlling, demeaning and hateful. I have asked him on many occasions to reassure me that he will not hurt me or our unborn babies, and he will not respond to that simple question. I told him I would file a police report if he didn’t.”
In other documents provided, including emails exchanged between the woman and Echard, his erratic behavior is crystal clear. “If it ends up being my child, I have decided that either you’ll take 100% custody of the child, or it will be put up for adoption. I will not be raising it in any capacity,” Echard said in one of the documents. “My hatred will only grow if you decide to put me through all of this,” he says in another email. “My personal hell would be having to have you be a part of my life.”
“Clayton’s behavior since [the pregnancy test] has been cold and heartless,” the woman states. Looking at these messages, we couldn’t agree more. “Clayton’s main concern at this point is his image, and he has decided to try to convince the public that he is a changed man from who he was on The Bachelor. He is a self-centered, unchanged man whose main goal is to get on Dancing With The Stars. He even threatened to sue me if I went public and that meant that he was not invited on the show.”
According to The Sun, Echard will finally comply with a paternity test and has it scheduled for Sept 26. Both parties are then due in court two days later on Sept 28.
