Laura Ramoso is so good at solo sketch comedy that even her most light-hearted characters somehow become controversial – her portrayals are just so darn convincing.
That would be alright if her hilarious TikTok videos, jam-packed of oh-so relatable characters didn’t go viral pretty much every time she drops one.
Although the 27-year-old comic began her career on Toronto’s comedy circuit, when Covid hit, while most of us were trying to get out on a run or attempting another botched batch of banana bread, Laura was amassing over 884k TikTok followers, and launching her career into online stardom.
How, you may ask? Well, her Italian dad and German mum have a lot to do with it, as she perfectly portrays their hilarious quirks in short video sketches to her followers, who lap up her relatable, nuanced performances, garnering millions of views.
‘Sometimes in the comments people will say it’s not nice to make fun of your parents like that,’ Laura revealed in a chat with Metro.co.uk.
‘I don’t respond to negative comments anyway, but my response now is that it’s not making fun of them, we are all laughing together. My parents also love the videos.’

At her Soho Theatre show, Laura just putting on a thin black polar neck leaves the crowd muffling laughter and stifling claps in recognition and anticipation for her exacting German mother impression.
But she’s not a one trick comedy pony. Throughout her set, Laura expertly morphs into a whole host of characters; from that North American girl who’s just got back from Europe, to a stand up comedian who just talks about how random everything is. Random!
While her crowd were 100% behind her in Soho, the online world can sometimes be less forgiving.
‘I made a video about an experience at the gynaecologist and she’s horrible – just an exaggeration of how a gynaecologist can treat you – and a lot of comments were saying I was scaring women from going to the gynaecologist,’ Laura revealed.
She continued, matter of fact: ‘I mean, I think anyone taking a TikTok comedy sketch so seriously that they wouldn’t seek medical help, I don’t believe that would ever happen.’
What’s notable talking to Laura is that she’s somehow completely side-stepped the ego of comedy.
While some comics will come to interviews armed with the confidence of a bull – often used to mask some insecurity, if I know anything about comics – or an artsy, airy disposition, Laura is straight-forward and seems totally unaffected by the whole charade of the industry.
It’s refreshing. As are moments she erupts into unexpected thought trains on stage, shouting and thrashing in character. It’s bold, and it’s brilliant.
But what would Laura do if someone asked her to get on stage, stripped back, without the cover of character?
‘I don’t really love doing hosting gigs, because I have to come on as myself. I just find that so much more challenging,’ Laura said.
‘It’s a safety thing. It’s just a comfort thing of hiding behind a character.’
Whatever her chosen face that day, Laura Ramoso leaves ego firmly at the door.
Laura Ramoso: FRANCES is on at Soho Theatre until the end of the month.
