Exhilarating, nostalgic, and action-packed, “Top Gun: Maverick” has viewers of all ages glued to the screen taking another journey with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise). The “Top Gun” sequel hit theaters on May 27, nearly 36 years after its original release back in 1986. Less than a week since its theatrical release, “Top Gun: Maverick” has already garnered widespread critical acclaim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film grossed $160.5 million just over Memorial Day weekend, making it the biggest film opening of all time for the specific holiday weekend.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is already generating a lot of hype among audiences, with many wondering how soon the film will be available to stream at home. Here’s what we know about when and where the “Top Gun” sequel will hit streamers.
What Is “Top Gun: Maverick” About?
Nearly three decades have passed since US Navy pilot Maverick joined the TOPGUN flight school and wowed his peers with his impressive, yet arguably dangerous, flight practices. After being ordered by former rival turned friend Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) to go back to TOPGUN, Maverick has to train a group of young, experienced pilots to carry out a risky assignment that has the potential to damage the Pentagon. During this time, Maverick relives difficult moments of his past as he trains Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his old friend Goose, who died in a flight accident 30 years prior. Through this experience, Maverick must come to accept his past and prove his abilities to the new group of pilots, all while rekindling a past romance.
When Will “Top Gun: Maverick” Be Available to Stream?
“Top Gun: Maverick” is currently screening exclusively in theaters. The film hit theaters on May 27, and if it gets the industry-standard theater run, it’ll be approximately 45 days before it hits a streamer. But according to Puck (via IndieWire), “Top Gun: Maverick” may get an extended theater run of 120 days.
Regarding which streaming platform the film will release on, Paramount+ will have first dibs. According to Rolling Stone, “Top Gun: Maverick” is distributed by Paramount Pictures Studios, so it makes sense that the blockbuster hit will land on the company’s affiliated streaming service.
Given the film’s late release in May, viewers can anticipate watching “Top Gun: Maverick” on Paramount+ around July 11 if it gets a 45-day theater run. But if the rumors are true that the reboot will have an extended 120-day run in theaters, you won’t be able to stream it at home until September.
