When audiences sit down for “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” they’ll meet a new actor who’s stepped into the role of Gellert Grindelwald: Mads Mikkelsen. Johnny Depp had previously played the role of the dark wizard, but left the franchise at the end of 2020. Depp announced at the time that Warner Bros. asked him to resign after he lost a case in UK courts related to allegations that he had abused his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp appeared as Grindelwald at the end of the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie and in the second film, “The Crimes of Grindelwald.”
