£1000 grant for huge mechanical fish which will bring people together for a ride

A sculptor says his dreams have come true after being awarded a £1000 grant from The National Lottery to create a unique artwork called ‘The Fish’.

Robert Jakes – project co-ordinator of community group Sand Palace Arts – plans to create a giant work of artistic engineering consisting of a colourful, moving fish sculpture.

Based in beautiful Pembrokeshire, Wales, it’s hoped the ridable piece will bring communities together – and it’s all thanks to a #CelebrateNationalLottery25 grant.

The fund was opened earlier this year to celebrate The National Lottery’s 25th birthday. It offered the public the chance to apply for funding of up to £1000 to deliver an idea that would bring people together in their community. With £2million of grants being awarded across the UK there could be a project happening where you live!

Projects all over the UK are finding out whether they have been successful and today we’re shining a light on one of the brilliant applications awarded funding to make a difference in their community. All successful applicants will find out if they’ve been awarded funding by January 31 2020.

Overjoyed Robert said he can’t wait to start work on the project, which will be made of recycled materials and combine science, visual impact and a community environmental message to unite coastal and rural communities in West Wales.

He explained: “This has been in the planning for years, and The National Lottery grant has turned our dreams into reality.”

“The idea is also to make new sculpture pieces for the top of the tricycle in the future.

“Part of the inspiration for ‘The Fish’ is highlighting local eco concerns, so it will be re-used and re-loved.

“Our artists group works with schools and families, capturing community imagination and bringing people together through creative expression. This is a deprived area, and seeing someone’s eyes light up with pride and joy at something they have made reminds you what is really important in tough times.”
