Angelina Jolie Urges People to "Check In With Each Other" While Self-Isolating

Angelina Jolie knows we're all having some difficulty coping when it comes to the difficult times we find ourselves in.

That's why the actress and Special Envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees took some time out for a recent video conference with California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris. Together, the pair discussed not just the importance of adhering to stay-at-home orders when issued due to the current novel coronavirus pandemic, but checking in on friends and loved ones.

"I think it is so important that people hear that," Jolie said during the conference, hosted by Time. "To love each other, check in with each other." Currently, a good portion of locations around the glove are under strict orders to stay at home, which is severely limiting the ability of individuals' to see their friends and family if they aren't practicing social distancing and self-isolating with them already.

"Be there, be a support group, keep your eyes open whether you are a teacher or a friend," Jolie continued. "I really do hope people hear this, and they do reach out, and they do pay more attention, and they are not sitting in a moment when they think, 'Well maybe, but it’s not my business,'" she added. She also went on to speak about a difficult subject related to a powerful essay she penned recently: child abuse taking place during quarantine. She penned said essay for Time as well.

Jolie noted that teachers "can't see the bruises" and people "aren't identifying what is happening within some home" since children are not attending school as a reminder that this is an important issue that must not be ignored during this time.

The actress then credited "a time in my life when I became more aware of what was happening around the world," with what motivated her, as Burke-Harris put it, to "continue to stand as a witness and not look away." She explained her version of self-care included writing in a journal and "crying all the time" until meeting a grandmother who changed that with a simple statement.

"I don't need you to cry. I need you to help me," was the powerful statement that inspired Angelina to work for change. It certainly looks like she is doing her part.
