Banana bread is on the rise – and you can spice it up on the cheap

WE’VE all gone bananas for banana bread.

It was the lockdown go-to bake, and by April online searches for the perfect recipes had increased sixfold.

But with the nights drawing in, it’s time for a seasonal revamp — so try these recipe twists which won’t bust your budget . . .

TOFFEE APPLE TREAT

Stick to your favourite recipe, but substitute one banana for half a cup of apple sauce, which is 55p for Tesco’s version.

You can then add a generous amount of chopped-up creamy toffee for an indulgent hit.

I like to slice up Sainsbury’s dairy toffees, 90p, into cubes for this — cheaper than using popular Werther’s Original chewy toffee, £1.50.

If you want to go the whole hog, decorate the top of your loaf with sliced apple before you bake. Yum.

SAVING: 60p on the toffees

CRAN-VERY NICE

Get your tastebuds geared up for Christmas with cinnamon spices and cranberry added to the mix.

Nab a bag of Creative Nature wholegrain banana bread baking mix, £2.99, at Asda (cheaper than £3.50 at Sainsbury’s) and follow the instructions on the packet — but mix in a teaspoon of cinnamon with it.

Once all poured into a loaf tin, swirl a generous dollop of cranberry sauce around the top before baking.

Use a jar of Ocean Spray’s cranberry sauce, £1 at B&M right now.

SAVING: 51p on baking mix

PERFECT PUMPKIN

It’s pumpkin-spiced latte season, so what could be better than mixing the best of both worlds?

Simply add around one and a half teaspoons of pumpkin spice to your favourite recipe.

Try buywholefoodsonline.co.uk, where you can find 50g for £1.73, plus get five per cent off with the code FIVEOFF.

It’s cheaper than popular American alternative Trader Joe’s from Amazon, which costs £13.99 for 51g.

SAVING: Approx £12.26 on spices

SHOCK CHOC

Bananas and choccies are a fantastic combo, and this one is really easy.

Simply add your favourite chocolate chips — milk, dark or even white — into the mix.

I find 85g works well, but you can change this to taste.

Tesco milk choc chips are just 80p for 100g — a cheaper option than popular Dr. Oetker choc chips, £1.40 for the same amount.

SAVING: 60p on the chocolate chips
