Best anti-chafe shorts for cycling: Triban 500 women's bibless cycling shorts

  • Triban 500 women's bibless cycling shorts, £19.99 from Decathlon – buy here

Sometimes, there's nothing better than a good ol' long bike ride on a warm day – but a lovely day can often be ruined by the dreaded chafing, or shorts that constantly ride up and feel super uncomfortable (trust us, we know the pain well).

These women's cycling shorts from Decathlon come equipped with extra padding to minimise painful seat pressure, absorbing vibrations and making for a less bumpy ride.

The padding is also anti-bacterial, and breathable – while the material of the shorts boasts sweat-wick, moisture-management properties.

The bibless shorts have flat seams for a more comfortable cycle, too, and they're a good length to minimise chafing and discomfort from inner leg sweat.

Material: Synthetic Colours: Black/pink Size Range: XS to 2XL

Best cotton anti-chafe shorts: Wirarpa anti-chafe shorts

  • Wirarpa anti-chafe shorts, £21.99 from Amazon – buy here

Cotton is a delight on a hot day, making it a perfect fabric choice for anti-chafe shorts as it's so light and breathable. We found it impossible to find 100% cotton anti-chafe shorts, which is probably because they need a little bit of stretch to stay in place.

These Wirarpa anti-chafe shorts are 95% combed cotton and 5% spandex, so you'll get the benefits of cotton without having to yank them up every few minutes. Plus, with a size range that spans from small to 5XL, the brand accommodates a huge array of body types.

Material: Cotton-spandex blend Colours: Black, nude, white Size Range: S to 5XL

Best plus-size anti-chafe shorts: Snag Chub Rub shorts

  • Snag Chub Rub shorts, £8.69 from Snag Tights – buy here

Insta-famous Snag hail from Scotland, and have perfected anti-chafing shorts — they look great and don't cost the earth.

The fabric of its Chub Rub shorts is super soft, and won't cling to your legs or feel too tight on the thigh or waist.

All of the shorts are moisture-wicking, with cotton gussets, so will keep you feeling fresh and cool all day long.

We tried its gorgeous leopard-print Stay Cool Chub Rub Shorts in Purr, and could not stop showing them off! They hit the nail on the head with the sizing, and even on the hottest day we still felt cool.

They came up quite high, without being restrictive like shapewear, so they gave us a great silhouette and we could wear them confidently every day with skirts or dresses.

The colour range is varied, with a really inclusive, impressive range of sizes that goes from a UK 4 to 36. Snag really has got it in the bag this summer.

Material: Stretch-fabric Colours: 9 available Size Range: 4 to 36

Best anti-chafe shorts for sports: Kit Change FIT shorts

  • Kit Change FIT shorts, £45 from Kit Change – buy here

With each pair of anti-chafe shorts being made out of 10 recycled plastic bottles, Kit Change clearly has the environment at the forefront of its mind.

These shorts are super soft recycled polyester, sweat-wicking and breathable and are available in black up to size XXL.

The high-elastane fabric the shorts are made from is designed to stretch and contort with your body, without causing any skin irritation.

We tried them out under an oversized tee for walking, spinning and rock climbing, but these would be great for casual wear too.

We found them super stretchy and they didn't hold us back or feel like they were nipping in uncomfortably at the waist. They did feel tight, but we saw it as extra security with the same effect as shapewear.

Material: Recycled polyester Colours: Black Size Range: XS to XXL

Best anti-chafe shorts for hiking: CEP Run 2-in-1 shorts

  • CEP Run 2-in-1 shorts 3.0, £89.96 from CEP Sports – buy here

Now, these are more like anti-chafing running shorts – but they're ideal for walking, hiking or trekking, too.

They're made with a medi-compression fabric that feels tight initially but supplies muscles with the optimum amount of oxygen, to help you exercise better, and recover faster.

We tried them, and at first, hated how tight they felt. But after a slow jog, we started to get comfortable and felt more confident wearing them.

Running shorts can often feel very short and encourage chub-rub, but these were ideal; they didn't pinch in, and they looked great on, too.

They're a major step up price-wise, being the most expensive on this list, but they're a good investment if you're keen on active adventure holidays.

Material: Recycled polyester Colours: Black Size Range: XS to XXL

What are the best anti-chafing shorts?

Our favourite anti-chafing shorts right now are the Snag Chub rub shorts as they're a great balance between price and performance.

Not only did they fit the bill for us, but they were also available for under a tenner when we tried them out.

They're great for plus size women, and ideal for under your cute summer dresses and skirts.

What causes chafing or 'chub rub'

Chafing is caused by your inner thighs rubbing against one another as you go about your day.

This problem can be exacerbated in the summer when skirts and dresses lead to sweaty thighs rubbing against one another, causing irritation.

How do anti-chafing shorts work?

Anti-chafing shorts work by smoothing the friction between your legs helping your legs brush past each other without rubbing in the middle.

As an added bonus, some anti-chafing shorts can act as shapewear to smooth out your silhouette.

Can I wear anti-chafing shorts under dresses?

Yes! Anti-chafing shorts are designed to be worn under clothes.

It’s worth bearing in mind that some are longer to prevent chafing all the way down your thighs.

So if you like wearing mini skirts, it’s best to look for shorter shorts.

What else can I use to help prevent chafing?

Some people swear by anti-chafing creams/gels to get them through the summer months, such as this extremely affordable Lanacane anti-chafing gel, available at Boots.

Do anti-chafing creams work?

Anti-chafing creams are basically moisturisers that you apply anywhere you’re experiencing chafing.

They act as a lubricant to reduce the friction caused by the rubbing, which should reduce or stop your skin from becoming red and raw.

They’re best for chafing caused by skin rubbing on skin rather than as a result of your clothes being too tight though.
