Brexit 50p coins sell out in 24 hours as Britain leaves the EU – The Sun

BREXIT 50p coins launched to celebrate Britain's withdrawal from the European Union have proved so popular they've sold out in 24 hours – but there are still ways to get your hands on one.

Five commemorative coins were launched just after midnight on the Royal Mint website yesterday and they've been quickly snapped up by collectors – check out our live blog for the latest on Brexit.

The 50p piece has the inscription: "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations", plus the historic date of Brexit underneath: "31 January 2020".

For those with the least cash to splash, there are an unlimited number of coins in "brilliant" condition available for £10.

You can still place an order for these, but they're currently out of stock, with the Royal Mint estimating delivery by mid-February.

Meanwhile, a "silver proof" version for £60 is also out of stock with 80 per cent of the 47,000 made now reserved.

Again, Royal Mint reckons you should get these in around two weeks if you order them now.

What Brexit 50p coins are available?

HERE'S a round-up of the Brexit coins launched and whether they're still available:

  • Circulated – 3million went into circulation on 31 January, with a further 7million going into circulation later this year
  • Brilliant uncirculated – an unlimited number of these are still on sale for £10. You can place your order, although you won't get one until mid-February
  • Silver proof – 47,000 of these went on sale for £60, although 80 per cent are now reserved. You can still place an order, although you won't get one until mid-February
  • Gold proof – 1,500 of these went on sale for £945 and they're now sold out
  • Two-piece Brexit coin and 1973 EEC entry coin set – 5,000 of these went on sale for £30 and they're now sold out
  • Withdrawal from the EU strike on the day sovreign – 1,500 of these went on sale for £800 and they're now sold out

But a two coin set featuring the new coin, plus a 1973 50p marking the UK entering the European Economic Community (EEC), has completely sold out.

There were 5,000 of these available for £30.

A "gold proof" version for a whopping £945 has also completely sold out – only 1,500 were available.

Plus, a "brilliant uncirculated" sovereign coin featuring Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the dragon design, which was also released to mark Brexit, has sold out too.

There were 1,500 of these coins available for the eye-watering price of £800.

We reported yesterday how the Royal Mint website kept crashing as it struggled to meet demand.

But if you've missed out, you might still find one cropping up in your space change as three million have been released into circulation.

A further seven million will be released throughout the year.

Here at The Sun, we're also giving away 100 Brexit 50p coins – see the box above for more.

The seven-sided coins could be worth thousands of pounds to the right seller if it turns up in your change – but only if they have the wrong date on them.

That's because the Brexit coins had initially been due to be released on March 31, and a second batch of coins was then manufactured when Brexit was delayed until October 31, 2019.

While the majority of the March and October batches have since been melted down and recycled, a small few are reported to still exist.

But coin hunters are being warned to watch out for fakes being sold on eBay.

Plans to produce 10,000 special Brexit coins were first announced by former chancellor Philip Hammond in the 2018 Budget.
