Bruce Lehrmann trial delayed further

The trial of the man accused of raping Brittany Higgins will be further delayed to give his new legal team time to prepare.

Former political staffer Bruce Lehrmann has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent, an allegation to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann will face trial in late June.

The ACT Supreme Court trial was originally slated to begin on Monday, June 6, however the date was abandoned after his original legal team was no longer able to represent him.

The trial was then postponed to at least June 20 after Canberra lawyer Kamy Saeedi appeared in court on Lehrmann’s behalf on Thursday afternoon, telling Chief Justice Lucy McCallum he had only just taken on the case.

Barrister Steven Whybrow appeared for the defence on Wednesday morning, applying for the start date to be pushed to June 27 as he had only been briefed on Monday afternoon.

“There’s a lot of material to get across,” Whybrow said, to which McCallum responded, “I think it’s inevitable, I don’t think I can force you on earlier than that.”

Whybrow told the court his team would be issuing summons and subpoenas for further material from the Crown.
