Can't salon dye? Just DIY! Public figures change their hair colour

Can’t salon dye? Just DIY! Public figures turn to home hair colouring during lockdown – from Nicola Sturgeon’s subtle shift to dark auburn to Anna Soubry dramatically going brunette

  • Public figures across the globe unable to access hairdressers during in lockdown
  • Several have adopted a dramatic new look, courtesy of a packet of hair dye
  • Formerly blonde ex-MP Anna Soubry debuted new dark locks on GMB today

With hair salons closed and make-up artists banished from duty, public figures across the globe are being forced to take charge of their own beauty regimes.

For many that’s involved a DIY haircut – or trusting their significant other with a YouTube tutorial and a pair of scissors.

Others – including Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and former MP Anna Soubry – have adopted a dramatic new look, courtesy of a packet of hair dye.

Having previously sported a blonde crop, Ms Soubry debuted her new darker locks on Good Morning Britain today.

Here FEMAIL takes a look at other public figures and celebrities who have switched up their hair colour since lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon

When Ms Sturgeon attended First Ministers Questions at Holyrood on May 13, her locks had strawberry blonde, verging on ginger tint – but this week the Scottish leader sported a much darker shade of auburn, which she matched with darker brows and eye make-up

Last week the Leader of the Scottish National Party, 49, revealed she has been maintaining her perfectly quaffed locks by chopping and dying her hair at home under the guidance of a Zoom hairdresser.

Edinburgh-based stylist Julie McGuire, 50, who’s been tending to the politician’s mane for the past six years, revealed the secret behind Ms Sturgeon’s tidy haircut to The Telegraph.

Julie said she has been leaving hairdresser supplies, such as colour formula and ‘proper’ hairdressing tapering scissors, outside her own front door for Ms Sturgeon to collect.

Anna Soubry

Former politician Anna Soubry resigned from the Conservative Party in February last year and joined The Independent Group.

She appeared on Good Morning Britain today to discuss Boris Johnson’s rejection of calls to scrap the NHS immigration surcharge.

Ms Soubry, 63, is usually blonde – but since lockdown she has changed up her look radically, sporting darker eye make-up to compliment her new brunette tresses.

Earlier this week she took aim at Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s unruly crop, tweeting: ‘34,000 deaths – the biggest national crisis in our life time and a nation crying out for leadership and Boris Johnson, our Prime Minister can’t even brush his sodding hair for this weeks PMQs. His disrespect and arrogance knows no bounds.’

Jacinda Ardern

The New Zealand prime minister is known for her enviable glossy locks, but since lockdown her mane appears to have taken on a slightly darker hue.

In photographs of Ms Ardern taken in February this year at a Maori Battalion Museum in Waitangi, her locks featured more of a chestnut tone, particularly at the ends.

But in more recent images taken at a Covid-19 press conference on Wednesday, the New Zealand PM, 39, showed off a much darker do.

It’s likely courtesy of her partner Clarke Gayford, who tweeted on Sunday: ‘Helped dye partners hair and gave daughter a haircut with scissors I bought at supermarket for $6. Remarkably both parties still talking to me.’

Earlier this week Ms Ardern appeared on The AM Show – a New Zealand morning news and talk show – where she shot down host Ryan Bridge for asking why she was dying her hair.

Asked ‘is it going grey or something?’, the PM replied: ‘Never… never… never… that’s not a polite question to ask anyone – I was about to say a lady – but anyone, actually.’

Donald Trump

At the beginning of lockdown, the US President appeared to have ditched his trademark blonde locks to adopt a more natural silver tone.

While Twitter was rife with people speculating whether it was Trump opting for a more distinguished look for the 2020 race, since the country went into lockdown his infamous straw-coloured hair has returned.

POTUS showed off his renewed blonde bonce during a meeting with his cabinet in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday.

Anna Haugh

Acclaimed Irish chef and owner of Myrtle Restaurant, Anna Haugh, has used lockdown as an opportunity to experiment with her hair colour.

She switched up her usual blonde locks for a vibrant pink shade which she debuted on Saturday Kitchen last month.

Her new look was appreciated by several viewers, with one commenting on Twitter following the episode: ‘Anna Haugh making me want pink hair!’

Another wrote: ‘I LOVE it! Would love to know what shade it is.’

Sarah Hyland

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, 29, is also experimenting with new looks while staying at home amid the pandemic.

The usually brunette American actress took to Instagram on Tuesday to show off her bold new red hair color which she proudly did herself, quoting Disney’s Little Mermaid in reference to the character’s long vibrant red locks.

‘”I wanna be where the people are…” #QuaranTINT crew (I did this all by myself! Very proud),’ Sarah wrote alongside several snaps of her colourful tresses.

Dua Lipa

Singer Dua Lipa is no stranger to changing up her appearance – and, clearly fed up of high maintenance blonde, she decided lockdown would be the perfect time for a vibrant new hair colour.

The New Rules hitmaker, 24, who is currently isolating in London alongside boyfriend Anwar Hadid, shared a collection of snaps to her Instagram that showed bright red tresses alongside four strawberry emojis.

Dua had sported two-tone blonde and raven coloured locks for some time, as well as dappling with pink strands in the past.
