Cheese on toast beats crisps and bacon butties to be named the UK’s favourite lockdown snack as people turn to comfort food to ease their anxiety

While Instagram is filled with people making banana bread and sourdough starters, people’s favourite lockdown snacks are the less photogenic crisps and toasts, a new study has found.    

Cheese on toast took the number one slot in a new study that looked at Britain’s favourite lockdown snacks – with 22 per cent of people calling it their go to edible boredom buster.  

Cheese and onion crisps took second place, while a classic bacon sandwich with ketchup was the third favourite.

Researchers from Raisin.co.uk polled more than 2,000 people across the nation and discovered the foods which have kept us going through the sheer boredom of lockdown, with cheese and biscuits placing fourth, with 18 percent of the vote. 

As people are stuck inside during the coronavirus pandemic, many have been taking to the kitchen to try out new dishes to keep busy in lockdown.

Meanwhile, others are finding comfort in ready-made nostalgic favourites, with Pot Noodles, Custard Creams, and hobnobs also high on the list of favourite snacks. 

And love it or hate it, one in ten of those surveyed, claim toast with Marmite is among the greatest snacks of all time.

4. Cheese and biscuits 18%

5. Salt and vinegar crisps 17%

6. Salted peanuts 16%

10. Tortilla chips and dips 15%

11. Chocolate brownies 14%

12. Hobnob biscuits 13%

13. Toast and marmalade 11%

14. Toast and marmite 9%

15. Lemon drizzle cake 8%

Other popular comfort snacks that emerged from the data were chocolate brownies (14 percent), and toast and marmalade (11 percent).

Thousands of people have taken to social media to show off the results of their cooking, while others have been searching for recipes online.

Banana bread and homemade pizza were the recipes most searched for over the past 30 days, according to a Google Trends report, which shows people have been looking up more recipes since the coronavirus crisis began than at any other time in history.   

We are also consuming an average of three cups of tea and three cups of coffee every day, while confined to our houses.

Kevin Mountford, co-founder for cash savings service, Raisin.co.uk, which commissioned the study said: 

‘It’s safe to say that it’s been a turbulent few weeks for the nation, with more testing times ahead. 

‘And time in lockdown has certainly seen extra snacking.’
