Many Britons are bombarded with unwanted phone calls after finding themselves on sales lists.
Others will be faced with crank calls after people they do not know get hold of their number.
What can you do if this happens to you?
One woman shared her tips on how to reduce the number of unwanted phone calls you receive.
Commenting on a post on the Express.co.uk Facebook account, Angela Davies told others how they could avoid getting caught up on unwanted phone calls.
She said: “I had this phone call this morning !! Just ignored it. Also, if you get crank calls…. if you pick up the receiver and don’t speak, they quickly put the phone down.
“I do this and have found a decline in the number of crank calls. Try it.”
Angela shared her hack and claimed simply not speaking when picking up the phone can be enough to cut a crank call short.
Britons should not get hassled if they did not give their number to the caller but if it still happens, there are some ways they can stop this, Citizens Advice explained.
Register with the Telephone Preference Service
Signing up with the Telephone Preference Service will add your number to a list which says you do not want to receive sales and marketing calls, Citizens Advice explained.
“It’s illegal for a company to call numbers registered with the Telephone Preference Service, so registering should scare companies away and stop them bothering you,” the website said.
Block nuisance calls
Britons are able to block calls from specific numbers, like international calls or withheld numbers.
The website explained: “There are products to block some calls but be careful they don’t also block calls you want.
“Ask your phone provider if they have a service to block some numbers, or you can install a call blocking device on your phone yourself. Ofcom has information about the different services your phone provider may have to tackle nuisance calls.”
If you’re getting calls about PPI or accidents
Companies are not able to call about PPI or personal injury claims unless you have told them they can, Citizens Advice website explained.
It said: “If they call without your permission, you can report them to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
It’s helpful if you know the number they called from and the date and time they called. If you don’t have all this information, you can give other details of the call – for example, the name of the company that called you. The Information Commissioner will investigate and can fine the company who called.”
If you think it’s a scam
Phone calls which sound like scams should be reported straight away, according to Citizens Advice.
