A journalist has slammed photo editing apps that allow influencers to shrink their waists and smooth their skin in seconds.
Danae Mercer, 33, who lives in Dubai, has built a 2.3 million-strong Instagram following with her pictures revealing how a simple tweak in posing, lighting and outfit can dramatically change how an influencer looks on social media.
In her latest post, she’s lambasted ‘subtle photoshopping’ revealing how it’s ‘so dangerous’.
In a screen recording posted this weekend, Danae uses the FaceTune app, to edit a photo of her bikini-clad on a boat.
Showing how easy it is to make subtle changes, she shrinks her waist, enhances her breasts and smooths out the skin on her face and thighs in just seconds.
‘Let’s talk SUBTLE photoshopping – and why it’s so gosh darn dangerous,’ she wrote in the caption.
‘First, subtle photoshop is EVERYWHERE. Influencers use it to shave off INCHES or SHRINK WAISTS, enhance skin or darken lashes.
‘It softens veins, removes cellulite, elongates legs and does a dozen other things.
‘And unlike those photoshop “fails” that pop up in the news from time to time, most subtle photoshop jobs are nearly IMPOSSIBLE TO SPOT.
‘Like this pic here. I’m posing (clearly!), but then I also using apps to change my body.

‘I shrink my waist and smooth my forehead vein, then get rid of the dimples on my thighs.
‘Apps like these exist for photos AND FOR VIDEOS.
‘My point here isn’t to shame the women who do this to their bodies – because I’ve been in that space, shrinking myself through apps, and it’s not a balanced one.
‘Instead I want to remind you that this happens. The internet is curated. The online world is filtered. And social media should never be a mirror against which you judge yourself’.
It’s the latest on many pictures Danae has shared, where she shows how small changes can reduce the appearance of cellulite, create the illusion of muscles and make her figure look longer and leaner.

Speaking to FEMAIL about her latest post, she explained: ‘Subtle photoshopping happens all the time online.
‘There are so many apps now that make it easy to erase cellulite, smooth stretchmarks, and shrink waistlines in a matter of seconds.
‘Plus so many of these “body enhancements” are so subtle that they’re almost impossible to spot.
‘Technology is getting smarter too. Apps now let you freeze the background while changing a body — avoiding wobbly door frames or distorted walls.
Danae also shared how she looked different posed and relaxed. She’s known left relaxing and right posed and edited
‘Plus it’s now really possible, and so easy, to edit bodies in videos using apps.
‘The point here is just to be really cautious. These edits happen all the time, and the internet is so darn filtered. Don’t judge your real self against someone else’s highlight reel. Don’t tear yourself down because what you see on here.
‘And remember to wear that bikini this summer – wobbles, jiggles and all’.
Danae has gone viral before for sharing how influencers give ‘false ideas’ of how their bodies are.
In February, she posted a series of videos to Instagram showing her step-by-step guide to getting the perfect beach picture, and how influencers fake ‘looking relaxed’ in photos.
While in March she revealed how videos can be edited to make someone look slimmer with just a few clicks of a button.
