A delivery driver has reportedly been sacked after leaving a racist voicemail while calling to arrange her delivery from Wren Kitchens.
Aisha McConnell, 48, was waiting for a final delivery from the kitchen store when she claims she received a message that sounded like "someone without an Indian accent putting one on".
The mum-of-one also said she could hear laughter, which further convinced her he was 'taking the mick' due to her name and reported the incident.
After waiting for five days, Aisha was annoyed to simply be told the driver was 'no longer with the business', which she claims came without a proper explanation of what had gone on.
Aisha, from Billericay, Essex, said: "I felt insulted. Straight away, I thought 'is that someone taking the mic?'
"When I listened to [the voicemail] I thought 'hmm, that sounds really off'.
"It didn't sound like an Indian person. It sounded like someone without an Indian accent putting on an Indian accent.
"Even the mannerisms of how they talked – you could hear the repetition. It's very much what people think a typical Indian person would sound like – but they don't.
"If you don't know me, you're going to assume I'm Indian.
"I'm actually half Pakistani and half French – but was born and married in England. I consider myself British but it did feel a bit targeted.
"They don't know anything about me but they could see my name. I didn't feel great.
"Would he put on a Japanese voice for a Japanese customer? I don't know.
"Right at the end of the recording you can hear laughing, like it's two guys driving along having a good laugh."
When Aisha returned home on Thursday [Jan 23] and played the voicemail to her family, they were equally as shocked.
Days later, she claims she was informed the employee was 'no longer with' Wren Kitchens but was not told why or what had happened.
Aisha said: "I kind of expected someone a bit higher up to say they'd look into it and say sorry it happened.
"They requested the recording of [the voicemail]. I sent them everything and didn't hear anything Monday or Tuesday.
"They then replied 'that person no longer works here'. That's not really an answer.
"If they turned around and said 'you're wrong, that's someone who does have an Indian accent', then I would say 'okay, I want to meet that person then', because you could tell it really wasn't.
"[But] I've had no explanation."
The mum says she is annoyed that Wren Kitchens did not fully explain what had happened regarding the worker other than telling her he was no longer with them.
Despite being offended by the message, Aisha claims she'd be 'horrified' if he was sacked because it would be 'passing the problem on to his next employer'.
Aisha said: "Wren Kitchens haven't said he did it – but they have said he no longer works there. I want clarity from them.
"Personally, I'm horrified if they sacked him. If he's been sacked, that's passing the problem on to his next employer.
"I don't know anything about this guy but I think it's terribly racist – it's a horrible thing to do."
Wren Kitchens declined to comment but confirmed that the employee in question is no longer working for them.
