Dermatologist shares the three ‘free skin hacks’ she swears by – before one of them is slammed for being ‘unrealistic’

A leading dermatologist has shared the three ‘free skin hacks’ she swears by as a professional – and why they will change your complexion in weeks.

Dr Shammi Theesan, from ODE Dermatology in Melbourne, said her three ‘favourite skin hacks’ don’t cost anything, but they will pay dividends with your skin routine.

The first thing Dr Shammi said you should do is wash your pillowcase three times a week.

‘Ideally it’s made of silk and if you don’t have one, ask your mum for a silk scarf and wrap that around your pillow,’ Dr Shammi said.

She prefers to use silk over cotton for pillowcases because it’s a ‘natural fibre and it’s also anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory’.

Experts generally suggest you wash your pillowcases at least every time you wash your bedsheets, so around once a week.

You can do it more if you sweat while sleeping, have oily hair or sometimes go to bed with your makeup on.

Not everyone was on board with Dr Shammi’s advice, with some saying it was ‘unrealistic’ to be washing your pillowcases so much.

But Shammi said it will help your spots if they are a problem with your skin.

The second thing the dermatologist said you need to stop doing is ‘relying on the SPF that is either in your makeup or primer’.

The reason why this isn’t working is down to the small amount of makeup you apply in comparison to the amount of sunscreen you would put on your face.

‘Use a proper sunscreen,’ the dermatologist said.

‘Make sure it’s got broad spectrum, UVA and UVB and I can promise you’ll thank me when you’re 50.’

UVA rays are considered ‘aging’ rays because they can prematurely age your skin by causing wrinkles and discoloration, and these rays can penetrate glass. 

UVB rays are the ‘burning’ rays, and these rays do not significantly penetrate glass. 

Both do damage to your skin and need to be protected against.

Gua sha is a natural, alternative therapy that involves scraping your skin with a massage tool to improve your circulation.

Your first cleanse should be done to remove makeup, while the second removes any dirt or grime from the skin.

‘Gua sha works using those lymphatic drainage points,’ Dr Shammi said.

‘It also relieves muscle tension.’ 

To use gua sha, you simply glide one of the tools smooth edges across the skin for two strokes, applying gentle pressure as you go.

You may apply a cream or serum to the area before using the tool to help it glide more smoothly.

Sunscreen: The facts and figures 

* Most adults need about one ounce, or enough to fill a shot glass, for the entire body – and don’t forget often-missed spots like the ears, tops of the feet and the back of the neck. 

* When using sunscreen, it’s important to apply it 15 minutes before going into the sun. And, again, remember to reapply at least every two hours, or after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.

* Broad-spectrum sun protection product helps protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays.

* UVA rays are considered ‘aging’ rays because they can prematurely age your skin by causing wrinkles and discoloration, and these rays can penetrate glass. 

* UVB rays are the ‘burning’ rays, and these rays do not significantly penetrate glass. Both types of rays can lead to skin cancer.
