Drivers told petrol switch to reduce CO2 could add £6 on cost of filling up

Drivers could face higher petrol prices across the country later this year, it has been revealed.

Changes to petrol designed to tackle climate change could add up to £6.11 to the cost of a full tank.

From September, those who drive older vehicles will spend more on petrol as stations will switch to sell more eco-friendly petrol.

According to The Sun, pumps will start selling more eco-friendly E10 petrol as opposed to E5, which is currently unleaded petrol.

The government claims the switch will help tackle climate change as well as reduce CO2 emissions in the country.

It would mean the E10 petrol contains up to 10% ethanol, a higher amount that the 5% ethanol of E5.

All cars can use E5 petrol but there are an estimated 700,000 vehicles which are not compatible with the new fuel.

Drivers whose cars aren't compatible with the E10 will still be able to fill up, but have to use premium petrol which is more expensive.

Figures from AA show the prices of unleaded in March are 125.3p per litre, while super unleaded is 136.40p.

Fortunately for diesel drivers, they will not be impacted by the petrol changes.

All cars made after 2011 are compatible for E10, as well as cars made since the late 1990s.

But some models from the early 2000s, along with classic cars, will be impacted by the changes.

Drivers are told to check compatibility on the GOV.UK website.

To use the tool, drivers must know the manufacturer so you can see which models aren't compatible.

The switch won't be immediate, but forecourts across the UK will begin offering E10 from September.

Once a petrol station switches to E10, it won't offer E5 as standard unleaded.

The government has warned putting E10 fuel in cars that are not compatible could lead to damage over time.

On the website, it stated: "Using a single tank of E10 fuel in a vehicle that is not compatible should not be a major problem.

"Unlike putting petrol into a diesel engine, you shouldn't need to drain the tank.

"Prolonged use of E10 petrol in a non-compatible vehicle, however, may cause harm and is not recommended."
