“Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x”

The couple have chosen an amazing and unique name for their newborn, and here’s a look at what it might mean.

Lyra

According to baby name website Nameberry.com: “The name Lyra is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "lyre”.”

Interestingly enough, the website adds that the beautiful name “could make a melodic choice for a parent interested in music, astronomy, or mythology,” which would make a lot of sense seeing as Ed is a world renowned music star.

However, it seems there could be another prominent reason why the 29 year old dad chose the name for his daughter.

Back in 2015, Ed tweeted: “Lyra and Will are relationship goals,” and it turns out the star was referencing the main characters from the His Dark Materials trilogy.

Clearly a fan of the Philip Pullman trilogy, it could be that Ed has named his daughter after Lyra Belacqua, also known as Lyra Silvertongue, who is the heroine of the books.

That same year, Ed also posted on Twitter: “Bar far, Philip Pullman – his dark materials are the best books I've ever read.”

Antarctica

The unique middle name of Antarctica chosen by Ed and Cherry could, of course, reference the continent itself.

However, it just so happens that Antarctica is a big talking point in His Dark Materials – Ed’s favourite trilogy.

The series focuses on armoured bears, frozen polar landscapes, the Northern Lights and sinister Arctic research stations, and one fandom site says: “The continents in Lyra's word include Asia and Europe, the Americas, Africa, Antarctica, and Oceania.”

Could Ed and Cherry have chosen a name solely based on Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy? Either way, there’s no denying the unique name is a very pretty one.
