Expert shares how you can save £332 on home energy with these top tips

As energy prices rise even further and as the cost of living continues to hit people’s pockets, the prospect offacing next month’s energy bill may be a daunting prospect.

In fact,if you’re looking for ways to save money on your energy bills, just know that you’re not alone.

Thankfully the team atUtilita Energy have put together some expert tips that could help households save hundreds of pounds on their home energy bills.

After revising its multi-award winningEnergy High 5 campaign, Utilita Energy estimates that all households can save up to £332 by making five simple changes.

In fact, one way to save a staggering £158 per year is to reduce the temperature by just one degree.

Meanwhile turning down your hot water tap temperature could save as much as £79.

Elsewhere, other simple changes include unplugging gadgets (not leaving them on standby), turning off lights and washing clothes at 30 degrees.

These small changes could see people save £54, £25 and £16 respectively.

But, away from making a big impact on people’s finances, the expert hacks can also have a big impact on the environment.

Indeed, according to Utilita Energy, leaving lights on in unoccupied rooms has the same environmental impact as driving 68 miles.

Speaking of the changes, Archie Lasseter, Utilita’s Sustainability Lead said: “The only positive to come from the energy price increases, is that energy efficiency has become a main focus for most households, which will help the pocket and the planet."

He added: “One of the most significant drivers for making energy efficiencies at home is the quantifiable savings attached to each action – almost three in five households said they would be more inclined to follow the advice if they knew how much money they could save (57%).”

And before bills increase further in October, helping establish a habit surrounding energy use can help save money in the long run.

For Dr Pippa Lally, a Behavioural Scientist at University College London, being specific with plans is the best way to help form a habit as it creates a link between a situation and an action.

This can be as simple as planning to turn off the light each time you walk out of a room.

Another way to create a habit is to do some preparation.

For instance, if the weather takes a turn for the worst, consider putting a pile of warm jumpers next to the thermostat – rather than turning up the temperature, you can add on another layer instead!
