We’re all having to adapt to social distancing but it seems one family went above and beyond to ensure their grandma didn’t miss out on her birthday celebrations.
Sara Byrne uploaded a heartwarming video of the moment her family surprised their grandma – affectionately known as Grandma Byrne – outside her home in Syracuse, New York.
Being in the ‘at-risk’ category for coronavirus, Grandma Byrne had been staying at home – but her loving relatives ensured she received quite the birthday surprise.
The family turned up to her house unexpectedly, carrying a ‘Happy Birthday’ banner and balloons. To stay safe, they remained at the end of her front garden and kept 1.5 metres apart away from each other – even the family dog joined in the celebrations.
In the footage, the family can be seen singing ‘happy birthday’ to their elderly relative, as she stands on her front porch.
Sara wrote on Instagram: ‘If you’re lucky enough to know Grandma Byrne, you’re lucky enough!! Wishing this amazing lady a very happy 95th birthday today, love you Gram!’
Her post was met with a plethora of positive comments, with many praising the family’s creative approach, at a time when old people are being forced to isolate themselves.
One emotional user replied, ‘This made me cry…Happy Birthday To your Grandma.’
While another commented: ‘This made me smile. Thank You for sharing. Happy Birthday, Grandma!!!’
Of course, the Byrne family are not the only ones who have been getting creative when visiting elderly relatives in quarantine.
Earlier this week, Carly Boyd wanted to surprise her grandpa with news of her engagement, so she turned up to his residential home and communicated to him through his bedroom window.
Speaking to KOLD, Carly said: ‘I really wanted to be able to tell my grandfather because he has dementia and there’s no phone in there that he has access to. I just really wanted to make an effort to tell him.’
