Kate Middleton ‘chatted merrily to eight-year-old boy’ in the first class train carriage on her way to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games this week after his father popped to the bathroom, an athlete has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 40, visited the city earlier this week to watch the tournament with their daughter Princess Charlotte, seven.
And today Matthew Syed, 51, revealed how he and his son had a surprise encounter with the mother-of-three while travelling on the train on Tuesday.
Writing about the impromptu meeting for The Times, he explained he could hear someone laughing along with his son while he used the toilet – and was stunned to see it was the royal herself.
He said the two were ‘chatting merrily’ and ‘having a whale of a time’, adding: ‘As I am doing my thing, I hear him talking to a woman in the vestibule. ‘Are you here alone?’ she asks. ‘No, my dad is in there’ – he says, pointing to the lavatory.’

Matthew explained he and his son Ted were travelling first class en-route to see table tennis event at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday when he popped in to use the lavatory.
The journalist wrote the pair sounded like they were having a ‘whale of a time’ and were laughing as he heard Ted tell Kate ‘that his father once won the Commonwealth gold’.
The two continued chatting while Matthew finished drying his hands and left the vestibule.
The former table tennis player added that he was ‘stopped in his tracks’ as he turned to see who had been entertaining his son.

”Kate?’, I blurt out,’ he wrote. ‘There are no security guards in the vestibule; no armed guards. But here is the Duchess of Cambridge, chatting merrily with my son.’
Matthew said that while Ted didn’t know who he’d been talking to, the eight-year-old said ‘she was really nice’.
He praised the Duchess’ ‘character and sense of duty’, adding that she ‘had no idea she was chatting to the son of a journalist…The monarchy is in consummate hands.’
Kate had been travelling for a day of royal engagements in the city with Prince William and their daughter Princess Charlotte.
The seven-year-old was on her best behaviour as she shook hands with sporting VIPs during the visit – and proudly revealed her favourite sport is gymnastics.

During this week’s appearance, Kate paid a touching tribute to her daughter as she donned jewels first worn at her christening for the occasion.
The Duchess opted to wear a set of jewels she first wore for Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015.
The mother-of-three donned the dazzling jewellery set, opting for her pair of £3,750 Mappin & Webb ‘Empress’ Diamond Carriage Earrings and her matching £2,000 Empress Mini White Gold & Diamond Pendant Necklace.
The day started with a visit to the Sandwell Aquatics Centre where the Cambridges joined Prince Edward, the Countess of Wessex and their children Lady Louise Windsor, 18, and James, Viscount Severn, 14, to cheer on athletes in a number of swimming heats.

Charlotte put on an animated display, giving her father a thumbs up, pulling funny faces, and even sticking her tongue out and she soaked up the atmosphere.
After the outing to the Aquatics Centre, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid a visit to a programme supporting young athletes. Princess Charlotte was photographed on her best behaviour, shaking hands with Tim Lawler, CEO of SportsAid.
Elsewhere the young princess revealed gymnastics was the sport she liked most and joined a nutritional workshop helping her parents place pictures of foods such as nuts, bread and grapes into the right groups, whether protein, carbohydrates, antioxidants or healthy fats.
