One day you’re 18 and looking forward to another non-stop weekend of partying, then you blink and suddenly you can’t think of anything better than being in bed by 9pm watching trashy TV.
With age comes wisdom, and a new appreciation for ‘how well a steam mop cleans the floor.’
Members of Generation X from around the US are sharing the ‘boring’ adult things that you learn to love with age – who doesn’t want to spend a Saturday night ‘scoping out a new grocery store?’
Gen X were born between the mid 1960s and the early 1980s, following Baby Boomers and coming just before Millennials, meaning, they’re mostly aged from 41-56 years old now.

Taking to Reddit’s ‘GenX’ thread, the group sparked a discussion about the unglamorous adult tasks they’ve learned to appreciate over the years.
Starting off strong, ‘TinktheChi’ the user who started the thread posted a screenshot of a tweet reading: ‘Some people think your forties are boring but later today we are going to Costco and getting an entire case of this green tea that I tried last weekend and really enjoyed.’
People clearly agree as it has nearly 2000 upvotes.
Browsing the aisles of Costco on the weekend seems to be a popular choice, with someone else adding ‘When I was a teenager, my parents were like ‘Get in the car. We’re going to Costco today’ and I couldn’t think of anything more boring.
‘These days, I can’t think of a better way to spend Saturday.’
Someone replied ‘Me too. I actually go super early which is even more ridiculous. It’s like Yay! I’m nearly the first one in the store.’
It’s not just Costco – grocery stores, especially new ones, can be thrilling.
Another user wrote ‘Yep. I’ve got an excursion planned with a friend to go scope out a new grocery store that opened in my neighbourhood 🙂 apparently it’s really awesome!’
Gone are the days of partying until the early hours of the morning – another member of Gen X added: ‘Just picked up a case of ensure. Gonna party hard, well until 8:30 anyways’
There’s something uniquely satisfying about getting chores done and out of the way, that you just don’t appreciate when you’re younger.
One Reddit user wrote: ‘I’m about to head out front and wash my car before the sun goes down. I’m actually kind of excited about that fact TBH.’
With someone else adding ‘I did that last night! Felt like quite an event.’

Another said: ‘I stayed home last night and did my laundry.
‘If you told me 20 years ago that I would have been happy about staying home and doing laundry on a Saturday night, I would have looked at you like you had two heads.’

New kitchen or cleaning appliances are also a cause for excitement, with one user proclaiming they knew they were fully settled into their forties when they were ‘so excited’ about how well their steam mop cleaned their kitchen tile floor.
Another great gift is a ‘good pair of socks for Christmas’ – something you simply tossed to the side when you were younger – ‘It’s on par with a quality pillow or super soft bed sheets.’
Someone excitedly responded: ‘I asked for (and got) fuzzy socks for Christmas last year and was very happy about it. I’m sure I will be again once it gets cold (we have hardwood floors).’
The thread proves that it’s the simple things in life that bring the most happiness – with many users agreeing that ‘it’s hilarious’ how much they can relate to each other.
One user said ‘Yeah we might go to dinner at Olive Garden, I don’t know, we might not have the time!’ which got over 60 upvotes.
To which someone replied ‘Olive Garden sounds so good! Are they open at 4? Don’t like to be out too late anymore.’
Another commenter explained the perks of going early: ‘Lol, we try to get there by 5 so we don’t have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table.’
