Holby City spoilers: Joe McFadden returns as Raf as Essie seeks answers

Kian (Ramin Karimloo) returns to Holby City tonight and Jac (Rosie Marcel)’s ready to give him a hard time for vanishing yet again.

You don’t get to stand Jac Naylor up and get away with it. Kian insists that he was only doing it to protect her, but she’s having none of that and, not confident that he’s ready for all the stresses of Darwin and wanting to show who’s boss, she puts him on elective surgeries only.

When Bea’s son Phoenix (Joshua Glenister) turns up demanding answers about his mother’s death, Kian tries to keep his composure – but as the stresses of the day pile up, Kian is driven to some desperate and shocking behaviour that has terrible consequences.

As Essie (Kaye Wragg) tries to come to terms with her terminal cancer diagnosis she’s looking for some comfort – and it arrives in the form of an appearance by her dead husband Raf (Joe McFadden). It’s a beautiful and poignant storyline, as Raf helps Essie to see what – and who – is most important in her life.

Ric (Hugh Quarshie)’s on the warpath as he’s convinced that Guy Self (John Michie) is drinking again after seeing him pay for a glass of wine in Albie’s the night before. But did Selfie drink the wine that Donna (Jaye Jacobs) left untouched? Has he fallen off the wagon?

His rough appearance suggests that he possibly has, though as usual he’s determined to prove his competence in theatre. As the pressure mounts, can he rely on Max (Jo Martin)’s support, or will Ric succeed in getting rid of Selfie for good?

And there seems to be romance brewing between Louis (Tyler Luke Cunningham) and Nicky (Belinda Owusu) – but he’s nervous about taking things further.
