Kate Middleton joined the Royal Family in 2011 when she married Prince William in Westminster Abbey. They are both senior working members of the family and are often spotted out with their three children.

Although the children’s lives are kept quite private, they are seen with Kate and William from time to time.

The most recent outing came from Prince William who took George and Charlotte to kick off the Sandringham race on Father’s Day.

When the family are seen in public, the Duke and Duchess often show public displays of affection towards the children.

Although considered unusual for Royal Family members to show affection in public, the royal couple have implemented this into their parenting techniques.

Modern norms also allow Kate and William to act more natural around their children.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Dannielle Haig, Principal Psychologist from DH Consulting explained: “The overt affection William and Kate show towards their children is most definitely unusual for the Royal Family.

“But my, how wonderful it is to see.

“As a psychologist, it is well known that children need to feel affection, love, and safety from their parents to truly thrive and be happy in life.

“To be kept at arm’s length and now shown affection as a child, can have all sorts of negative impacts on a child psychologically and emotionally.”

Kate will often hold her children’s hands or pick them up while in public.

The expert added: “It is healthy to be affectionate as a family and I’m glad that Kate and William feel comfortable enough to display this playfulness with their children to the world.

“It seems that protocol in the Royal Family is softening and evolving with the times.

“With the amount of influence that the royal couple have, our future King and Queen are setting a great example to other parents to unapologetically enjoy their time with their children.

“I feel like they are showing the world that they are just like us and they are progressing the behaviours and attitudes of Princess Diana in their openness with their parental affections.”

Princess Diana also showed affection towards Prince William and Prince Harry when they were growing up, although they were often frowned upon.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward as well as Meghan Markle and Harry have also been seen to show affection towards their children in public.

Expert Jane Browne added that Kate and William are “natural teachers”.

She said: “You can see the both of them getting stuck in and being very hands-on which is what any teacher of children George, Charlotte and Louis age has to do.

“Children learn by seeing and doing and rarely by being told.

“Just like the best teachers, and the best authors, the trick is to show, not tell.”
