Kate Middleton: Why Duchess of Cambridge broke huge royal tradition with her children

Kate Middleton and Prince William are members of the British Royal Family. They have three children together, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one. When picking the education of their children, the royals appear to have ditched the tradition of others in the family.

There are many royal traditions that will be followed by members of the family.

Although not all royals have attended boarding school, it is a tradition followed by many.

Prince Philip was educated away from home at Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland.

Since then, royals including Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Zara Tindall have been educated there.

Other boarding schools have been chosen by the royals including Eton, where both Prince William and Prince Harry studied.

So far it seems as though Kate has skipped this tradition as she is already opting for other choices.

Rather than following what is traditional in the family, Kate and William have reportedly been more focused on what is best for their children.

Zoe Bonser, Show Director at The Baby Show, told Express.co.uk: “Kate also values quality family time and has broken some traditions.

“For example, sending George to a mixed school, dropping George off at school herself, or having her mum to help after births rather than an army of staff.”

In September 2017, Prince George started his education at Thomas’s School in Battersea.

Last year, Princess Charlotte also started going to the same primary school.

The Duchess may be more concerned with finding a school that is the right fit for her children rather than the school others have been too.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, education expert Murray Morrison said: “Just like any other family choosing a school – whether private or state – they will have looked at the options, considering the quality and style of education that each school offers and considering other factors like location, friends and family and reputation.”

By doing this, Kate has opted for a school that is different from the ones chosen by other royals.

While it could be easy to pick a school attended by members of the family before, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opted for one that they believed to be the best fit.

Murray added: “It suggests to me that they are a family like any other.

“They are choosing what they felt to be the best option for their children rather than simply doing what their parents did.

“Of course they are fortunate to be able to afford private school fees, which is not an option for many, but they have made their choice by judging which school would be the best environment for their child.

“They will undoubtedly have strong experiences of their own schooling which will have influenced their decisions: each school has a distinct culture, whether that’s an emphasis on character, academic performance, sport, creativity or other areas of education.

“As a parent, if you found your education coloured, positively or negatively, by these aspects of your own school, that’s likely to be the strongest factor in your choices for your own children.”
