Summer has come to the UK, with temperatures topping the 30°C in the wake of the Iberian plume which has reached these shores.
It might be good news for sunseekers, of course, but with the hot weather set to continue for much of the month many of us will be looking for ways we can cool down in the heat.
While we might normally reach for the fan or pop on the air conditioning, the current cost of living crisis might cause many of us to think again given that both options can prove pricey both to buy and to run.
Fortunately there are many other ways you can keep cool in a hot spell, which don’t have to cost very much at all.
Rebecca Bebbington, online consumer expert at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk said: ‘After a miserable few months of weather, we can’t help but rejoice once the sun comes out and the weather starts to warm up.
‘But we forget how it feels to sit in unbearable heat at home, especially if the temperature doesn’t lower in the evening and there’s a lack of wind.’
With that in mind, if you’re finding the heat too hot to handle, why not give one of these hacks a try?
Here are nine tips from NetVoucherCodes.co.uk to keep cool in the summer heat:
Wetting headbands
Rebecca says: ‘An instant cool feeling to the head can be achieved by either wetting a sweat headband or freezing it in the freezer.
‘This will help you relax from the hot temperature and feel less overpowered by the heat.’
Make a cooling mist
This one’s pretty simple to do – you just imix water and tea tree extract drops to make a mist you can spray yourself with.
‘The extract helps keep a fresh scent so you don’t feel like you’re just splashing yourself with water,’ Rebecca explains.
Cylinder ice cubes
One of the most important things to do when it’s hot is make sure you stay hydrated – but your water bottle can warm up quickly when the temperature rises.
To keep it cool, freeze ice-cubes in a cylinder-shaped tray and pop them into your bottle.
Take warm showers
This might sound unexpected, but a warm shower can actually help cool you down.
Rebecca points out: ‘Cold showers only help for an instant effect, but a mild warm one can help gradually warm your body temperature so you’re not feeling overheated all day.’
Splash water on wrist, ankles and forehead
‘Splashing water around all three areas can help cool you down from top to bottom,’ Rebecca says.
‘Use a damp cloth throughout the day to maintain a nice cool feeling.’
Keep suncream in the fridge
You’ll need to keep the suncream topped up in hot weather – but did you know you can also stick it in the fridge so that it cools you down when you apply it?
Rebecca explains: ‘Having the sunscreen lotion in the fridge can help you deal with the heat and protect your skin from sun damage if you’re heading out for the day. It naturally turns it into a cooling moisturiser.’
Freeze your bed sheets
Sleeping can be tricky when the weather’s hot – with the temperature only dropping a fraction once the sun goes down, it can make for some sticky nights which could leave you struggling to sleep.
There are ways you can get around this – but one of the simplest is to pop your bedsheets in the freezer.
‘To feel cool in bed, freeze your sheets, pillowcases and duvet cover an hour before getting into bed to help you hit the pillow quicker,’ Rebecca says.
Keep your blinds closed
You might be tempted to fling open the windows when it’s hot outside, but actually keeping windows closed and blinds down can keep your home cool.
‘Having the blinds closed throughout the day helps to stop the sun from shining in and making the room unbearably hot,’ Rebecca explains.
‘Make sure to keep them shut between 12-4 in the afternoon when temperatures hit their highest.’
