Lidl announced earlier this year that some of its stores are “unfit for purpose” due to the buildings’ poor conditions.
The supermarket closed three of its UK stores in May and is planning at least one more closure which is likely to take place this summer.
Lidl announced that although some branches are closing permanently, others are relocating and new stores could open in the next few months.
Workers from the affected branches will be offered roles at alternative locations, the food giant confirmed.
But Lidl is not the only supermarket announcing closures this year, and other companies such as Iceland and Argos also confirmed they are shutting down a number of stores this summer.
Lidl stores closing this summer:
- The Quadrant, Redditch – closing this summer, the exact date has not yet been confirmed
The Lidl store in The Quadrant, in Redditch town centre, near Birmingham, is shutting down after the supermarket opened a new store on Battens Drive, in Redditch, last summer.
Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO, commented: “The last few years have been challenging for everyone, but we’ve made it clear that we’re more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store.
“That’s why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country.”

Lidl announced that the company is experiencing “record growth” this year after opening 15 new stores in 2023.
Ryan McDonnell added: “We had over 1.4 million new shoppers coming to us from our competitors over the course of last year. This alone shows the potential for continued growth as customers refuse to pay a premium for their shopping, when they know they can get the same, if not better quality at Lidl.
“As we progress further into 2023, we know that more shoppers will make the switch, and whichever of our stores they choose, they know they’re getting the best value.”
