With the possibility of a second lockdown looming, many of us are having to work from home or, at the very least, spend a little more time behind closed doors.

If there is one positive that can be drawn from this relative isolation it is that it means that we have the time and inclination to do those dreaded household tasks that we might traditionally ignore.

And one of those is of course defrosting the freezer. How uncool is that task?

Chipping away at the ice is akin to chipping away at your soul, and as your arm starts to ache you wish you could just melt away or evaporate into thin air.

Writing to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, which shares advice in a forum of people who are fans of the social media cleaning star, one woman asked: “Has anyone got any idea of the best way to defrost this freezer?

"It’s integrated but we normally use our other one.

"With a baby on the way I want to clear both out so I can batch cook but obviously I need to get this defrosted first. Best way to do it without making a complete mess?"

Fans were then quick to offer advice to the fellow Facebook user, with the most common tip being to use hot water.

One wrote: "I emptied the trays and filled them with hot water. It was done in 10 mins with a bit of scraping."

Another commented: "Use a washing up bowl or similar with a kettle full of hot water.

"Shut the door for 30 mins and ice will melt and soften. Put lots of towels on the floor."

A third added: “First thing is to put the kettle on then turn the freezer off with all drawers and food out.

It's so important to defrost a freezer and you should do it annually so it doesn’t make your device slower and more expensive to run.
