DEAR DEIDRE: YESTERDAY my mum hit my dad across the back with a broom so hard it snapped.
He was in a lot of pain when I called round. He cried when he told me what had happened. He said she has hit him before but just with rolled-up newspapers.

He thinks my mum is getting Alzheimer’s but I think he is making excuses for her.
My dad is 76 and my mum is 78. I always thought they had a happy marriage and I am so shocked.
My husband said he was not surprised, as my mother has always been the matriarch in the family and very critical of me.
My husband says my lack of self-confidence is down to her. I am 37 but I don’t know what to do.
DEIDRE SAYS: It could well be oncoming dementia if her behaviour is escalating. There’s a big difference between being domineering and actual violence.
Together, you and your dad should tell your mum that she needs to have a check-up with her doctor because you are worried about her.
Explain to the doctor what has happened beforehand and your fears for her mental state. Her doctor can’t discuss her case with you but it will help to ensure they do the appropriate tests. Go with her if possible.
