Waitrose has introduced its first ever lunchtime meal deal – and to mark the launch, the British supermarket has revealed its bestselling sandwiches and wraps now and ten years ago.
Demand for one middle-class staple hasn’t reduced, with the prawn mayonnaise sandwich remaining the top seller.
But new fancy offerings have taken the top ten by storm, including the hoisin duck wrap, which is the upmarket retailer’s fifth bestseller, and the steak and caramelised onion chutney sandwich, which is fourth.
Classics such as the BLT, tuna mayo and ham and cheese sandwiches, however, aren’t as popular with Waitrose customers as they were ten years ago.
The bacon, lettuce, and tomato option was the third bestseller a decade ago. But it’s dropped to tenth position today. Meanwhile, tuna mayo is now the seventh most popular, rather than the fourth.
Taking third place now is the Waitrose Essential egg mayonnaise sandwich, while the second spot goes to the Waitrose Essential Cheese and Onion.

The supermarket’s smoked ham and cheese sandwich no longer makes the top ten bestselling sandwiches list, neither does the salmon and cucumber.
Salt beef and mustard mayonnaise is a new entry on the list, securing the eighth place.
Wraps have also become increasingly popular with one in four people buying the item instead of a sandwich.
Waitrose’s customers can now get a sandwich, wrap, salad or sushi, as well as a snack and drink for £5.
MyWaitrose loyalty card members who bring their own reusable cup can also get a free cup of coffee when they purchase the meal deal.
Several grocers in Britain, including Sainsbury’s, Asda and Tesco, already offer meal deals, however the Waitrose deal is a bit pricier than its rivals.
Shoppers can get a sandwich, drink and side at Sainsbury’s and Tesco for just £3.50 and £3.90 respectively. Asda offers a three-for-two deal, meaning the price of its lunchtime offer ranges from £3 to £5 depending on what items are selected.
The new meal deal at Waitrose will launch on the 30 August.
For £5 customers will be able to choose from over 300 products and can opt for one of the sandwiches, wraps or salads, or sushi (from a selected range), along with a choice of snack from a selection of cereal bars, crisps and snack pots, and a drink.
Options within the offer include customer favourites such as the Essential Cheese & Onion sandwich, PlantLiving No Duck Hoisin Wrap, Tomato & Basil Pasta, Deliciously Ella Cashew Cranberry Fruit Nut & Seed Bar, and a Strawberry & Banana Smoothie.
Jennifer Moscardini, Waitrose Food to Go Buyer, said: ‘We’re a nation of sandwich lovers. Sales are up nearly 40 per cent since 2020. More people are working in offices again, and travelling more so looking for a fantastic meal deal option.

‘This lunchtime deal means our customers can get a great quality sandwich, wrap, salad or sushi, along with a snack and a drink for £5, and if they have a myWaitrose loyalty card, and a reusable cup they can get a free cup of coffee at the same time.
‘We haven’t compromised on our standards either. We use British higher welfare chicken, pork & beef in our sandwiches, MSC prawns and salmon, and all our eggs come from free range hens.
‘This year we’ve introduced more meal deals than ever before to help customers with the cost of living crisis, as well as investing £100m in new lower prices across our aisles.’
