Body language expert Judi James made the claims to Express.co.uk. She said: “It was understandable that all eyes were on the Queen for this first official outing since her husband’s funeral but in terms of body language signaling it was Prince Charles whose displays and rituals might have been a cause for concern.”

The expert claimed the Duke of Cornwall, who was joined by his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at the event, looked as though he was feeling “anxiety”.

She said: “While his mother showed the strength, resilience and mettle she is famous for, looking less frail and more energetic and engaged than she has at State Openings for the previous few years, Charles’s constant fiddling and fidgeting rituals on his throne beside her suggested possible agitation or anxiety.

“As he walked his mother up the stairs to her throne Charles performed a curt leg-pat on the side of his left leg.

“The gesture looked like a self-motivational one as though he was trying to spur himself on for the ceremony.

“As the Queen sat poised, calm and upright on her throne, Charles performed what looked like non-stop checking or self-comfort rituals, pulling his trouser legs after he sat down before settling into a gesture that resembled a bowler throwing a ball from one hand to another prior to bowling it.

“His toes curled upward and then down again, with both gestures suggesting some tension or impatience.

“He then began to massage and stroke his fingers together though, which looked more like a self-comfort ritual to create calm under pressure.

“When he parted his hands they lay on each of his legs, performing a crab-like pinching ritual.”

The expert suggested the prince appeared tired, and there were moments he appeared on the brink of sleep.

Judi said: “There were also two moments when the camera closed in to show his head leaning forward and his eyes looking downward, giving the impression he might have been on the brink of nodding off.”

The expert told Express.co.uk Charles’ body language is often very characteristic.

However, she claimed there were some new gestures shown by the Prince at the event.

Judi said: “The Prince is famous for his body language rituals, including the cuff-fiddle, pocket-pat and truncated checking of his top inside pocket, but they have formed a recognizable, signature trait and usually only occur briefly when he is first appearing or being greeted by hosts.

“These appear to be new gestures and were much more prolonged.

“Charles must have been under a lot of pressure recently, with the rifts with Harry and the re-structure of the royal Firm and it was sadly too easy to see the depth of his grief at his father’s funeral.

“The body language here suggests we shouldn’t underestimate the effects all this has had on the heir to the throne.”
