Prince Charles, 72, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 74, appeared to be in high spirits as they stepped out in Exeter on Monday. The couple went maskless as they spoke to crowds on the day England celebrated the end of most lockdown restrictions.

The future king and consort wore huge grins as they met a group of young people celebrating Freedom Day following a visit to Exeter Cathedral.

The royal engagement was to mark the city’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature and the launch of The Royal College of Nursing’s Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme in England.

Body language expert and author Judi James analysed photos of Charles and Camilla’s during the outing and shared her insights with Express.co.uk.

According to the analyst, Charles was his “naughtiest ever” as he chatted to fans.

Judi said: “Prince Charles appears to be on the finest form ever here as he chats face-to-face and mask-free with a group of young women on what is being called Freedom Day.

“His face becomes wreathed in smiles, with deep facial furrows breaking out to show how congruent his joyful body language is here, and the pushing out of the upper lip as he chats suggests he is the one promoting the laughter.”

The future king seemed unable to contain his mirth as he turned to share a joke with Camilla, Judi claimed.

She said: “When the Prince turns to share the conversation with Camilla his facial expression is the naughtiest ever, with the grin getting even wider as his eyes dart to one side in what looks like mimicry of a mock-guilty expression.”

The Duchess remained more reserved than her husband but shared his upbeat demeanour, Judi claimed.

She said: “Camilla has taken her usual more reserved back seat here, standing slightly behind her husband as he meets the people waiting but also pressing closer to him than usual as though sharing the good, upbeat mood.”

Charles looked a bit like a naughty schoolboy as he chatted to the crowds, Judi claimed.”

She added: “As Charles involves her in the humour his cheeks redden and he pulls his lower lip upward to look more like a naughty child that has been caught out than a seventy-plus heir to the throne.”

Social media was awash with speculation as to whether the royals would go maskless of Freedom Day this morning.

The Palace has confirmed they will conduct engagements without masks when they are in keeping with Government guidelines.

Prince William, 39, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, and the Queen are all expected to do the same.

Daily Express royal correspondent Richard Palmer replied to a tweet about Charles and Camilla not wearing masks, writing: “Not surprisingly really, as they had said they wouldn’t be wearing masks there this morning because it is not required.

“They will, however, wear masks if they are visiting places where it is the policy that masks are required.”

Camilla celebrated her 74th birthday at the weekend and a striking new photo of the Duchess was shared with the public to mark the milestone.

Camilla and Charles split their time between Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Clarence House in London.
