Ricki Lake is heading into 2020 a “liberated and free” woman.
In a candid and emotional social media post shared Wednesday, the 51-year-old talk show host revealed that she’s been struggling with hair loss for nearly 30 years, “suffering mostly in silence.”
“It has been debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things,” Lake wrote. “There have been a few times where I have even felt suicidal over it. Almost no one in my life knew the level of deep pain and trauma I was experiencing.”
The TV star shared that ever since her hair was “triple-processed and teased” on a biweekly basis for her role as Tracy Turnblad in 1988’s “Hairspray,” she’s struggled with hair loss. “Yo-yo dieting, hormonal birth control, radical weight fluctuations over the years, my pregnancies, genetics, stress, and hair dyes and extensions” also contributed to the issue, she added.
After decades spent relying on extensions and wigs — as well as experimenting with supplements and even steroid shots — Lake decided she was “so done with hiding.”
“I buzzed my hair off and it feels so good!” she exclaimed. “For 2020 and beyond, I want to be real.”
Lake’s post inspired an outpouring of support from her famous friends; Rosie O’Donnell commented, “Love u so,” while Andy Cohen wrote, “Beautiful inside and out!”
“I am so incredibly proud of you and so happy for you and what you have done for yourself and all of us,” added fellow TV star Pamela Adlon.
