A mum has revealed her terror after her young son was viciously mauled by a dog while walking home from school.
Alfie Lawson, 12, was left with skin hanging off and five deep puncture wounds in his arm following the attack in Ormesby, North Yorkshire.
The animal struck when Alfie stopped to stroke it, reports TeesideLive .
Alfie's mum Michelle Thomas, 35, claims her son asked the dog's owner for permission to pet the animal.
The owner of the German Shepherd/Akita cross said no but then the animal lunged and took hold of Alfie's arm, Michelle claims.
Michelle has shared pictures of her son's wounds in a bid to warn other youngsters about the dangers posed by some dogs.
"In a way Alfie has been lucky, it could have been so much worse," she said. "The next child might not be so lucky, it makes me sick at the thought.
"If Alfie had bent down to stroke it, it could have got his face.
"I've never felt so sick and scared in my life."
Michelle said Alfie is really familiar with dogs and has been told to always ask for permission from the owner before ever stroking an animal, something she says he has always done.
The incident happened as Outwood Academy Ormesby Year 8 pupil Alfie, from Spencerbeck, was walking home from school with a friend last Tuesday, November 19.
The dog eventually let go of Alfie's arm before he fell to the ground, she says.
In a stoke of luck, Michelle's friend's happened to be there at the time and was able to assist.
They took him straight to James Cook Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where the wounds were cleaned and partially stitched.
The whole experience has left Alfie shaken and is now afraid to go out by himself.
Michelle said: "He doesn't remember much from it. He looked down at his sleeve and saw the damage, got his jumper off and saw what the dog had done to his arm."
Alfie is now recovering from the incident at home. Hundreds of people have commented on her Facebook post, wishing him a speedy recovery.
"It only seemed to take a couple of seconds and it just lunged at me," said Alfie, who is at home recovering from the incident.
"When the dog bit me, I never felt anything. I remember looking down at my sleeve and then I fell down to the floor.
"I had a jumper and a coat on and I remember looking down and seeing a hole where the skin had come off. I just saw the skin hanging off.
"I don't trust the big dogs now. I remember saying 'can you help me get him off?'"
The incident has been reported to Cleveland Police who are investigating.
A force spokesman said: "The father of a 12-year-old boy rang police just after 4pm on Tuesday 19 November, reporting his son had been bitten on his left arm by a dog while he was on Stapleford Road in Middlesbrough that afternoon.
"The boy received treatment at James Cook University Hospital.
"We took initial details and spoke to the gentleman again the next day to get more information on the dog and its owner and we informed him this would be recorded as having a dog out of control.
"Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Cleveland Police via the 101 number quoting Event 198605."
