Q I have recently stopped wearing glasses — but I hate how noticeable my eye bags now are.
Is there any way to get rid of them without surgery?
A There are any number of energy-based devices, such as Plexr plasma and Morpheus 8 radiofrequency microneedling, that aim to improve the look of eye bags by applying intense heat, which sets off a skin-tightening response.
But this incurs significant temporary damage (swelling, bruising, weeping), which in some cases can do more harm than good.
‘We advise against such devices for an 80-year-old, as at this age the eyelids are likely loose, so lower lids risk being dragged down and away from the eyes, which is both unsightly and uncomfortable,’ says oculoplastic surgeon Rachna Murthy of London’s Face Restoration (facerestoration.com).

‘Provided the eye bags are not very significant, which would require surgery, I would recommend disguising their appearance with injectable fillers.
‘Collagen-boosting HArmonyCa lifts the outer ‘lateral’ cheeks.
This technique supports and so diminishes droopy bags.
In addition, small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler can smooth the under-eye area.’
Dr Murthy charges from £2,000 for these two treatments, depending on the bags and quality of skin.
Outside London, this could be about £1,250.
