We’ve already seen first-hand the powerful effects of the MySweetSmile Teeth Whitening Powder, which claims to deliver epic results without damaging enamel.
Metro gave the powder a try to see if it lived up to its claim, with two writers testing out the supposed fast-acting results – and both were impressed with the product.
With the brand’s teeth whitening powder securing a legion of loyal fans, we were all ears to hear about the brand’s teeth whitening strips, which – like the powder – use a PAP-based formula to remove stains and whiten teeth after just one application, supposedly without any damage.
Thanks to its pioneering ingredient of PAP, as opposed to more abrasive formulas that use ingredients like peroxide, the Teeth Whitening Strips claim to swerve sensitivity or irritation, with a kinder formula.
If you’re not going to opt for professional treatments, which will arguably work better than at-home jobs, let’s be honest, strips could be an affordable and effective way to whiten teeth at home, according to Dr Antony Lam, Orthodontic Specialist at Elleven Dental.
He told us: ‘Whitening strips can help to eliminate internal and external stains caused by eating, drinking and smoking.
‘Although whitening strips are not as effective as professional treatments provided by dentists, they are affordable and easy to use.’
With the MySweetSmile powder claiming to have ‘amazing results after a week’ by shoppers, we were keen to delve into the reviews of the brand’s Teeth-Whitening Strips (£24.99) and see if they can rival their much-hyped sister product. Spoiler alert: it appears they most certainly can!
MySweetSmile PAP Teeth Whitening Strip Reviews
The reviews are in – and overwhelmingly positive, with some calling the strips ‘my favourite so far’ when it comes to teeth-whitening buys.
That’s a big call.
‘As a smoker and tea lover I have never seen my teeth look this good, even after a dental cleaning. Very generous amount included in the box so I will continue to buy when I finish my current box,’ wrote one happy shopper.
Others commented that, while the strips don’t give the same effect as professional whitening from a dentist, for them they’re a solid option when it comes to teeth whitening at home.
‘These strips stick really well to my teeth, they do not taste bad and they gradually whiten your teeth after the first one to two treatments. I wouldn’t say they whiten like a dentist, but when I had mine whitened at a dentist it made my teeth feel funny for a few days, which these do not do making them a great alternative at an affordable price.’
And another user wrote: ‘I highly recommend these to anyone who is feeling a little self-conscious about their smile. I noticed myself always hiding my teeth in photos because of the yellowing that has accumulated with age, but having used these for ten days I feel like I’ve turned back time. My teeth look so much whiter and I’m finally feeling like I can smile with my teeth out without embarrassing myself.
‘Don’t get me wrong they’re not as white as you see on TV but don’t forget most models on TV have veneers anyway. However, they will restore the natural whiteness to your smile and make them sparkle again.’
Why PAP could be a smarter choice for teeth than peroxide
As Dr Lam explains: ‘If used in too-high doses, or used over a prolonged period without dentist supervision, peroxide can damage your teeth enamel – causing a great deal of sensitivity and discomfort.
‘Dentists are very responsible with using CE-stamped quality whitening products to safeguard patients.’
We notice these strips are peroxide-free and instead use the active whitening ingredient PAP (Phthalimidoperoxycaproic Acid, if using its full name).
PAP works very similarly to peroxide, but instead it only breaks down the stains and discolouration without damaging enamel and doesn’t cause any sensitivity or irritation.
Using teeth whitening strips: some considerations
When using any teeth whitening product at home it’s important to take into account some expert advice so that you don’t do more home than good. Here’s what Dr Antony Lam, had to say.
- Do your research and speak to your dentist – the teeth whitening industry has grown significantly in recent times and as a result, there are a lot of low-quality, unsafe products on the market, which deliver sub-par results and actually pose risks to your dental health. Make sure you only use teeth whitening products from a trusted manufacturer and as recommended by your dentist.
- A lot of whitening strips, and teeth whitening products in general, contain hydrogen peroxide, which can cause damage to the teeth enamel and in turn sensitivity with long-term use or over-use. Again, if you’re concerned that whitening your teeth with over-the-counter products will cause sensitivity, seek treatment via your dentist who will use whitening products in safe dosages and be able to advise on managing any discomfort.
- Manage your expectations. Whitening strips are a good option for people with little-to-no staining on their teeth, but if you have more noticeable staining you should consider professional whitening through your dentist, as over-the-counter products are milder and will only make a subtle difference.
