Members of the Royal Family including Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Kate Middleton attended Prince Philip’s funeral today which took place in Windsor Castle. After the service had finished, the family could be seen walking out together, with the Duchess of Cambridge walking beside the Countess of Wessex.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex joined the Royal Family in 1999 when she married Prince Edward.

She has been a working member of the family ever since and even attends events on behalf of the Queen.

Like Sophie, Kate also joined the family in 2011 after marrying Prince William in Westminster Abbey.

Throughout the years, the pair have been spotted at events together.

Walking side-by-side out of St George’s Chapel, the Countess could be seen placing her hand on Kate’s back as she wiped away her tears.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James explained that Sophie has shown herself to be “strongly supportive”.

She said: “After an understandably sombre body language display during their arrival at the chapel, the Royal Family suddenly showed their more openly emotional side after the service was over.

“Sophie has shown herself to be a very strongly supportive and almost maternal presence in the family recently and the way she pulled off her mask to walk up closer to the Queen who turned to look round on her way into the chapel suggested a very empathetic and caring approach.”

As the Queen entered St George’s Chapel, she turned and bowed her head one last time at Prince Philip’s coffin before joining the Dean of Westminster in St George’s Chapel.

Thirty guests attended the funeral today in line with Covid guidance, and they all sat socially distanced from each other.

After the funeral had finished, Royal Family members departed St George’s Chapel before reuniting with one another outside.

Kate can be seen walking side-by-side with Sophie Wessex, just behind Prince Harry and Prince William.

Judi added: “She was also seen touching Kate on the back in a gesture of support and William echoed this as his arm went out to touch his wife on the back in an affectionate gesture after the service.”

Other members of the family also showed their emotional sides as they said their final goodbyes.

“Prince Charles seemed to be in tears and even Zara and Mike Tindall wore expressions that suggested very deep distress,” Judi said.

For the funeral, Kate wore a stunning necklace that belonged to the Queen along with a pair of earrings, also from the monarch’s collection.

The royal has worn several pieces of jewellery from the Queen’s collection over the years.

The pearl choker necklace was worn by Queen Elizabeth during the 1980s and 1990s.

In line with royal protocol, Sophie also dressed in an all-black outfit with a long dress and high heels.

She added a pair of pearl earrings to the look and a plain black mask.
