Marvel fans theorized that Spider-Man: No Way Home would feature the Sinister Six. The trailers for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film confirmed that at least five villains from past Spider-Man movies would make their return. So, it was plausible that Sony and Marvel were leading up to a Sinister Six team-up. However, that notion never came to fruition in the MCU movie.
The Sinister Six are a group of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains
Spider-Man is known to have epic villains in the Marvel comic books, and some of them even teamed up as the Sinister Six to fight the superhero.
Doctor Octopus initially brought the supervillains together and served as its leader for most of its appearances in the comics. The original members included himself, Vulture, Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter. Doctor Octopus created the Sinister Six after failing numerous times to defeat Spider-Man.
Over the years, the team has evolved and featured other villains. Hobgoblin, Venom, Lizard, and Rhino are among the villains who have been a part of the Sinister Six in the fight against Spider-Man.
The MCU movie’s writers reveal their original ideas for the script
During an interview with TheWrap, the Spider-Man: No Way Home writers, Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, discussed their original plans for the script, including the Sinister Six.
“Before the whole idea of this movie, there were other ideas,” McKenna shared. “Because we don’t come with any ideas, we all sat at the table once the ink was drying with the Sony/Marvel deal, and all we had was, we ended the movie, the last movie with Peter’s identity being spoiled by Mysterio, and that was our jumping-off point because at least we could cling to that.”
The writer continued, “We were coming up with different storylines that were just right for the tag like that, so inevitably we were like, ‘Well, what if Kraven, what if other villains?’ We were kicking around a lot of different ideas.”
“And then finally one day, I think for various reasons, there were reasons why we couldn’t do certain storylines that, I think it was Kevin [Feige] who goes, ‘Remember that idea with all the villains that we were talking about for a tag? That Sinister Six idea? Why don’t we just do it in the movie, this movie be about that?’ Then that just blew everything open.”
McKenna added, “And how do you get there? Because we were already talking about the idea of It’s a Wonderful Life with Peter going to Doctor Strange and trying to reverse the fallout from everything. So it was already in the air that he was going to Doctor Strange to help clean up this giant existential mess that had happened to him. So then it all started coming together.”
Sony once had plans for a Sinister Six movie in their ‘Spider-Man’ universe
As many fans recall, Sony had big plans for Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. The production company even had a Sinister Six film in the works, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 teased the villain team-up. However, with the introduction of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU, most of their plans fell through.
But Sony is trying to rebuild its Spider-Man Universe. They have released two Venom films, and Morbius is scheduled to premiere on April 1, 2022. So the Sinister Six could still appear in a future Sony film. Fans are campaigning for Sony to bring back Garfield, so anything’s possible.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
