Surprise holiday stimulus payment of $6,300 being sent out in city on December 15 – do you qualify?

SOME students in Atlanta can expect to get a surprise holiday stimulus payment of $6,300 by December 15.

The stimulus payments come as student debt in the United States recently topped $1.7trillion.

One school in Atlanta is taking steps to lessen the burden for its students.

Morehouse School of Medicine will offer students a $6,300 grant, which is being referred to by some as a holiday stimulus check.

The school's president, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, wrote an email to students on Wednesday outlining how they may use the extra cash.

"I am happy to announce that Morehouse School of Medicine will provide a financial gift of $6,300 to assist each of our currently enrolled, degree-seeking students with additional academic, financial, and mental health support costs such as childcare, food, transportation, housing, and healthcare needs," the email said.

The school currently has more than 750 students, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The money comes from the first Coronavirus relief package, which was signed into law by former President Donald Trump in March 2020.

The legislation initially included $14billion for US colleges and students, and another $21.2billion was added in January.

In March, another $39.6billion was added for colleges and students through the American Resue Plan.

Morehouse School of Medicine received $56.4million through the plan, according to the Journal-Constitution.

WHAT STATES HAVE STIMULUS CHECKS COMING?

Elsewhere around the country, residents of certain states can expect to get some pre-holiday stimulus cash as well.

California, Connecticut, New Mexico, Vermont, Tennesse, New Hampshire, and Florida are among the states that have issued extra relief funds to their residents.

The funds are being issued to people in certain professions or to individuals and families whose income falls below a certain level.

California implemented the Golden State Stimulus to residents who were required to have filed their 2020 tax return by October 15.

On November 29, officials started to mail out more than 800,000 paper checks as part of the Golden State Stimulus II program.

The payments, worth between $600 and $1,100, are sent to those earning less than $75,000 a year.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced the Back to Work program for $1,000 in stimulus checks, starting on May 30, 2021, which will continue until December 31, 2021.

The requirements are more involved than other states with specifics on when residents filed for unemployment and how long they were on unemployment.

In New Mexico, anyone that wasn’t eligible for the state's relief benefits in August can apply for another round of economic relief.

Low-income households received $750 back in August.

Meanwhile, although Vermont is not issuing a direct payout, the state is offering to cover moving expenses up to $7,500 for people relocating to the state.

The caveat is the individual must be relocating due to unemployment in hospitality and construction.

In New Hampshire, families of three without an income can receive a check worth $1,086.

And in Florida, the state is offering teachers a one-time payment of $1,000.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has said that 175,000 teachers and 3,600 principals will be eligible to receive the funds.

The payments first started landing in mailboxes in August.
