Standing in a mud-soaked field in Hungary in 40 degree heat as 300 armour-clad warriors clouted each other with broadswords while dozens of horses stampeded through their ranks, David Michod wondered what the hell he was doing.
"It was horrible," says the Australian writer-director of The King, which debuted on limited cinema screens last week ahead of a November 1 release on Netflix. "It was one of those experiences that made me wonder whether or not I wanted to have this job at all.

"I was watching these people do this crazy stuff and worrying for their safety, and desperately hoping that nothing bad would happen.
"On some giant level making movies is just silly," he adds. "If someone seriously injured themselves in the process I think I would find it hard to forgive myself."
Thankfully the only blood spilled was fake and now The King has been nominated for 13 AACTA awards, including best film and best director.
The field for this year's awards is particularly strong, with Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale leading the charge with 15 nominations and Anthony Maras's Hotel Mumbai also picking up 13.
Those three will fight it out for best feature film with three others: Rachel Griffiths' Ride Like a Girl (three nominations), which is the most commercially successful Australian film of the year having taken more than $8 million at the box office; Wayne Blair's Top End Wedding (three nominations), the second-biggest earner of the year; and Judy & Punch (nine nominations), directed by Michod's partner Mirrah Foulkes.
In some respects it's a miracle The King is even in the running. After the film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to strong reviews in September, the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts bent its own rules to allow The King – which had at that stage not been screened in Australia – into this year's field.
"What a release means these days is changing," AACTA chief Damian Trewhella said last month by way of explaining the sudden rule change. "It's such a fast-changing landscape that we're having to adapt as well."
Among The King's other nominations are three for Joel Edgerton. He is nominated as co-writer with Michod for best screenplay, and is also up for best supporting actor (he plays Falstaff in the film) and, as one of The King's producers, for best film.
Actor Damon Herriman goes one better with a record-breaking four nominations: best actor in Judy & Punch, best supporting actor in The Nightingale and, in the television categories, best supporting actor in both Lambs of God and Mr Inbetween.

Foxtel's four-part drama Lambs of God has also set a new benchmark, picking up a staggering 18 nominations in the TV categories. It will vie for best drama series against Bloom (Stan, five nominations), Total Control (ABC, seven nominations), and Foxtel's Mr Inbetween (four), Secret City: Under the Eagle (six) and Wentworth (two).
The 2019 AACTA Awards will be presented on December 4 at the Star Event Centre in Sydney, with an edited telecast on Seven and encore screenings on Foxtel. Tickets for the event are available to the public via aacta.org
