The one lesson I’ve learned from life: Mollie King says you can’t be perfect all the time

  • She admits to doubting herself when they disbanded, five years ago
  • She has since built her confidence back up and writes a daily gratitude list

Mollie King, 32, was a member of pop band The Saturdays and, in 2017, reached the semi-final of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing. She now co-hosts the Weekend Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1 and is in a relationship with England Test cricketer Stuart Broad.

Throughout my life, I’ve struggled with confidence. I’m dyslexic, so school was a challenge, especially if I had to read something out in front of the class. That’s why joining The Saturdays felt so good, because I was working with a team. I loved the unity of being with the other girls.

Five years ago, however, we effectively disbanded, and it was almost as though I went through a kind of grieving process. I felt lonely. I’d gone from seeing the rest of them 24/7 to being on my own. I began to doubt myself.

It wasn’t until I was on Strictly Come Dancing, and now Radio 1, that I was able to build my confidence back up. I love the adrenaline rush that comes from performing.

I’m guilty of over-thinking, though, and of being too hard on myself. If I make a mistake, it can live with me for days. But I’ve gradually come to realise that, while I try to be my best, you can’t be perfect all the time. If I’m ever feeling wobbly, I’ll get in touch with my mum, Sue, who always has a way of putting me back on my feet.

Confidence also governs how you feel about your outward appearance. Of course, there are days when I want to put my hair in a topknot and slouch around in gym gear. But if I’m out and about, I’m conscious of wanting to present myself in the best way.

Having said that, I think social media means too much focus is attached to appearance. Deep down, people should like you because of the sort of person you are, not because of the right shade of highlights in your hair.

I’ve taken to writing a gratitude list at the start of every day — three things for which I should be grateful.

That way, I put myself into a positive mindset. And, truly, I can’t complain: I have a charmed life.
