Even though she’s technically not a member of the royal family anymore, royal fans are familiar with Prince Andrew‘s ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.
Many are aware that the Duke and Duchess of York wed back in 1986, but separated in 1992 after Fergie’s toe-sucking scandal made front page news. She and the prince divorced four years later but today maintain a close relationship and even live together at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Park. Because fans are starting to see Fergie present at more and more royal events like Prince and Meghan Markle’s wedding and the Royal Ascot, there have been questions about what she does for work these days.
Here’s more on Ferguson’s jobs and the surprising thing she did before she met the prince.
Fergie’s surprising job before she married Prince Andrew
Before she joined the royal family Ferguson had a few different jobs including a not-so-glamorous one that she happened to be pretty good at.
The duchess revealed that she used to clean toilets.
“You won’t believe it but when I was 18, I cleaned very good mirrors,” Fergie told Swedish TV show Skavlan. “I cleaned lavatories when I was 18 and graduate’s bedrooms; they all left it very messy.”
Fergie also said that she used to work in a restaurant but never learned how to cook.
“And then I waitressed in a strudel house. I don’t cook, I just took the strudel out of the deep freezer and put it in the oven; that’s cooking,” she said before adding, “Then I married a prince, it was great.”
Ferguson has kept very busy post-divorce
As part of her divorce settlement, Fergie agreed to be paid $20,000 annually but if she wanted to continue to live anything close to her royal lifestyle she needed to find other sources of income, and she did.
Fergie never really disappeared from the spotlight and embraced her public platform. In 1997, she became a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers. Fergie’s decision came after years of name-calling by the media in which she was referred to as the “Duchess of Pork.” Her relationship with the company lasted 11 years and she lost more than 50 pounds.
She also co-authored dietary books with Weight Watchers and later penned several children’s books. In 2011, her memoir titled Finding Sarah: A Duchess’s Journey to Find Herself made the New York Times’ best seller list.
Ferguson also appeared on a number of TV shows over the years including Friends, Project Runway All Stars, The Rachael Ray Show, and The Dr. Oz Show. Princess Eugenie recently revealed that her mom also served as a producer for the movie The Young Victoria.

Fergie’s most important work though has been with various charities. She and her daughters founded Key to Freedom — a nonprofit which helps support females from India who have been victims of abuse and trafficking. She’s also involved in the charity Street Child, which provides education programs for children in remote and disaster-affected countries.
