DEAR DEIDRE: WATCHING my son sink deeper and deeper into depression was tearing me apart.
I wrote to you in desperation, asking for advice on how to help him after he said there was no point in living any more.
He was only 24, at the start of his life, and yet he had given up on education, jobs and relationships. I’m his 50-year-old mother.
All he did was sit in his room playing online games and watching porn.
I was terrified that one day he’d harm himself or even take his own life.
You made me feel listened to and gave me hope.
You sent your support pack on depression and recommended that I get in touch with suicide prevention charity, Papyrus (papyrus-uk.org, Hopeline 0800 068 4141).
My son has been having counselling and is on antidepressants, which are helping.
He has even started applying for jobs and thinking about an apprenticeship.
I know we’ve got a long way to go, but I feel much more hopeful about the future.
Thank you, Deidre.
