Will Princess Beatrice Be the First Royal Stepmother in Queen Elizabeth's Family?

The palace announced this week that Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson‘s oldest daughter, Princess Beatrice of York, is engaged to property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Several royal fans have noted that princess’ fiancé has one young son, meaning that Beatrice is going to a stepmother. Now, some are wondering if she is the first member of Her Majesty’s family who will be a stepmom.

Here’s the answer to that, plus the new title Beatrice could take after she and Mozzi tie the knot.

Beatrice is the first blood princess to become a stepmother?

Mozzi shares a 2-year-old son, Christopher ‘Wolfie’ Woolf, with his ex interior designer Dara Huang. The former couple seems to still have a good relationship. In fact, upon hearing the news Huang said, “I wish the best for Edo and Beatrice and look forward to uniting our families.”

According to The Daily Mail, Beatrice will be the only blood princess to marry someone with children and take on a stepchild.

The queen’s granddaughter and Mozzi have known each other for a number of years and went public with their relationship in 2018.

Following their engagement announcement, the couple released a statement which read, “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married. We share so many similar interests and values, and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Their royal wedding will take place sometime next year.

Are other royals step-parents?

While Beatrice will be the first blood princess to become a stepmother there’s another royal in the queen’s immediate family who has already been a step-parent for years.

When he married Camilla Parker Bowles on April 9, 2005, Prince Charles became a stepfather to Camilla’s two children, Tom and Laura. In turn, his second wife became Prince William and Prince Harry’s stepmother.

Princess Anne’s second husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, is also a step-parent. Although he and the Princess Royal did not have any children together he became Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips stepfather when he married their mother in 1992.

When Beatrice and Mozzi say “I do” the princess could get a new title. Her sister, who was known as Princess Eugenie of York, changed her title to Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Jack Brooksbank after their wedding. Beatrice could go that route and become Princess Beatrice, Mrs. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. However, there’s another choice she might consider.

The Express noted that Mozzi is a count, known as Count Edoardo Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi. He inherited the regal title from his father, former alpine skier Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi. Therefore Beatrice could become a countess if she chooses.

Mozzi’s parents said that they “are truly delighted” about their son and Beatrice’s engagement.
