Winter sex tips and positions to bring some heat to your relationship

It’s cold. Very cold.

One way to stay warm without sticking the heating on high? Getting snuggled up with your partner.

But while the summer is associated with getting hot and heavy (and yes, it’s true, you really do get hornier in hotter weather), winter is a season that brings up images of lazy lounging under blankets on the sofa.

And let’s be real, doing nothing does sound appealing when it’s getting dark at 4pm and you’re bundled up in two layers of leggings and wooly socks.

That’s why you might need to give your love life a bit of a shake-up to keep things fresh in the colder months and make the most of each other’s body heat.

We’ve got you covered with expert sex tips for the winter that will turn up the heat.

Share a hot bath

Julia Margo, the co-founder of sex toy brand Hot Octopuss, recommends coaxing yourself out of the sweapants and chunky knits with a nice warm bath – or even a hot tub, if you’re fancy enough.

Then, try getting intimate in the tub – it’s a lot easier than shower sex, promise.

‘The water is great for a multitude of sex positions as you are essentially weightless, so enjoy the warmth of the tub, some amazing sex and get the hot chocolate ready for your return,’ Julia tells Metro.co.uk. ‘To add something even more special introduce a toy, some brands now have waterproof sex toys for solo or couples sex.’

Play with dice

Psychologist and relationships expert Lucy Beresford suggests using some position dice (you can find a bunch online) to select different actions (stroke, lick, nibble) to do on different parts of the body.

‘You are guaranteed lots of laughter – which also boosts the immune system, thus improving your resistance to illness – great news when everyone has the latest winter cold doing the rounds,’ she notes.

Bring blankets into the mix

Don’t worry, you don’t need to let go of your blanket when it’s freezing. Just get them involved.

‘Sex utilising blankets can be great,’ says Julia. ‘Pulling the blanket overhead during missionary or cowgirl can add a really intimate feel closing off the rest of the world and all distractions, which is often hard to do.

‘Stay warm and get intimate!’

Get spooning

Spooning is a great position for staying nice and cosy.

Julia says: ‘Your bodies are close and intertwined and you can literally use each other’s body heat. If anything it gives more of a reason to get closer… and closer means deeper.

‘Enjoy getting close and don’t forget to let your hands explore -This is a perfect position to provide some clitoral stimulation whether that be with your hands or a toy.’

Before you turn on the heating, have a quickie

‘The winter months can be a great excuse for quick and passionate sex (like an excuse is needed),’ says Julia. ‘Use the opportunity to have passionate sex, pulling only the essential items of clothing down.

‘Sometimes there is nothing better than some quick sex and just pulling down the necessary items can feel a bit naughty, especially if you’re somewhere you shouldn’t be.’

Get cooking

We know, endless stodge is tempting when it’s chilly and dark, but now and again, make some effort.

‘Romance each other by cooking romantic meals to boost your sex drive,’ recommends Lucy. ‘Add spices like cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to your recipes to increase blood flow and raise body temperature, which is said to improve sexual performance, while nibbling on dark chocolate releases feel-good hormones.’

Use a chair

Don’t just stick to your bed – a change in location can do wonders when it comes to hitting refresh.

‘The bonus of chair sex is that the chair can be positioned anywhere,’ notes Julia, ‘like in front of a roaring fire, or in the cosiest room of your house.

‘So take a seat and let your partner sit on you. This is an amazing position to do at any time, but it’s especially great for keeping warm as your bodies will be close together and you can hold each other at the same time.’

Prioritise oral

Going down as the temperatures do the same is a great shout, because you can stay under the covers and in warm items of clothing.

‘When we are talking sex it doesn’t just mean penetration, send one partner under the covers while the other stays snuggly and then swap,’ suggests Julia. ‘It is the perfect way to stay warm and receive pleasure at the same time.

‘Focusing on each other individually can be amazing for your intimate relationship as well, so bonus.’

Try some new positions

‘It’s all too tempting to snuggle a thick woolly jumper when the thermometer drops, rather than your partner,’ says Annabelle Knight, sexpert at Lovehoney. ‘But winter is the best time for experimentation.’

She recommends three positions to get you out of your comfort zone…

The Concertina

‘Concertina could be the position to fold and entwine yourself into this winter,’ says Annabelle. ‘It may look complicated, but once your arms and legs have mastered it, you’ll be off.’

Here’s how it works. One partner lies on their back with their legs bent and raised. The other partner squats over them and straddles them with their feet positioned either side. The reclining partner places their legs on the shoulders of their partner and puts their hands on their bum to help pull them in. The penetrating partner reaches back with their hands to use the reclining partner’s hips for balance and support.

Tangling up all your limbs doesn’t just keep you cosy, but also allows you to tailor the depth, pace and angle of penetration.

Lovehoney recommend adding in restraints for the reclining partner to bring in some kink, or a wearable couple’s vibator.

The Click and Connect

This one’s all about deep penetration.

One partner sits with their arms stretched out behind them for support and their legs stretched in front of them, with knees slightly raised and apart.

The other partner backs onto their partner’s lap, facing away from them, easing themselves into being penetrated.

‘The angle that’s achieved by the positioning of the receiving partner is ideal for super-targeted G-spot or P-spot stimulation, and can be easily adjusted with a slight raise or lowering of the hips,’ explain Lovehoney.

‘The seated partner can also free up their hands to tease and caress their partner’s external sweet spots for extra thrills.’

The Arachnid

This is a relaxed position ideal for when you’re feeling a bit lazy and full of food.

One person sits on the bed (or on a chair), resting their back against the headboard or wall, while the other straddles them.

Bring in a blindfold or restraints to take things to another level.
