There seems to be a theory for everything in the dating scene lately – with women taking to social media by testing out the latest on their boyfriends or potential partners.
Last month, we saw the emergence of the "orange peel theory", which involved women testing their boyfriends by asking them to do simple tasks or them to "see if they really care" about them. But now, there is a new – and rather weird – theory circulating online.
The 'red nail' theory is the idea that if a woman wears red nails, or has them painted in that shade, she will be more attractive to her partner. While this may seem simple enough to test, there is apparently a bizarre reason behind why men supposedly find this shade of nail polish alluring.
In a video, which has gained more than 155,000 likes, a woman who posts as Navya Passi explained the simple trick works because men apparently associate the nails with those of their mothers and grandmothers and how they would wear them.
She said: "GirlbossTown on TikTok basically said that men are attracted to red nails, and the reason for that is they've seen their mums and their teachers and any women in their life having red nails or red lipstick, which I always thought was a grandma colour, but apparently not.
"Now every time they see red nails, they will either compliment it or even just notice it, because that is what they've been attracted to. Which sounds really weird when you think about it."
However, the "weird" theory seemed to pay off as she claims she got compliments from men after applying press-on red nails. The effect became the ego-boost she never knew she needed as she declared: "I personally think that they look hot and I feel super powerful when I have them on. I'm moving to red nails."
Viewers were left stunned by the clip, taking to the comments claiming they were going to give it a try too. One user said: "THIS IS SO TRUE! A guy I went on a date with told me he though red nails were attractive. I only get compliments from men on my nails when they’re red."

Another added: "Power statement with the nails." A third commented: "There is definitely something about a red nail that feels powerful! My SO always compliments when I wear red polish!"
Meanwhile, a fourth seemed put off by the theory as they wrote: "I'm never painting my nails red then." Others even joked that Sigmund Freud – who theorised that people are attracted to people like their parents – has been validated by the theory and declared it "must be stopped".
