World’s first cheese conveyor-belt restaurant is now open

An endless carousel of artisanal cheeses? “Dairy” to dream no longer.

Go ahead and pinch yourselves, because this conveyor-belt cheese-tasting restaurant is no hallucination.

Pick & Cheese opened Sept. 7 in London’s Seven Dials Market, Lonely Planet reported, where cheese lovers can take a seat at the bar and pick from a selection of 25 of the UK’s finest fromages, such as cheddar and blue Stilton.

“We think this style of cheese-and-wine bar will work so well here — it’s the perfect stop for a pretheater snack or to refuel after a hard day’s shopping,” founder Matthew Carver told Lonely Planet.

Color-coded plates make it easy for customers to determine the price of their particular tasting. Pick up East Sussex’s hard, cow’s-milk-based Mayfield cheese for 2.95 pounds ($3.70), or try a pairing with bresaola cured beef from Tottenham for 6.10 pounds ($7.60). Many plates also come with accouterments, from candied chili peppers to honeyed garlic, and — on the sweeter side — homemade sticky pear jam or a cookie — er, “biscuit,” as they call it on the other side of the pond.

“We’ve tried to cater to the more well-known flavor profiles, as well as trying to push people out of their comfort zone to try something new,” said Carver.

Inspired by the conveyor-belt sushi restaurants that dot the globe, Carver decided the concept was perfect for his second cheese shop.

“In our Camden restaurant, our customers always want to pick different cheeses from our house list and create their own bespoke cheeseboard,” Carver said. “We wanted to come up with a way to offer this, while showcasing the cheeses at their very best.”

What a time to be alive.
